Fayetteville State Downs Chowan on Late Bucket

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University men's basketball team fell to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in the CIAA after falling in a tough battle with Fayetteville State University in CIAA divisional cross over action. With the game knotted at 84, FSU's John Herrington converted a layup with: 03 to play in the game to help propel his team to a 88-84 victory over the Hawks. The Broncos even their record at 5-5 overall and move to 2-1 in league play. Today's second half battle featured four ties and five lead changes but it was the Broncos that would have the final word at the Helms Center tonight.
 
After giving up 54 first half points to the Broncos, the Hawks came out in the second half to slow the Broncos offensive efforts. Over the course of the second half Chowan chipped away at the first half lead the Broncos had built and took their first lead of the second half after CU's Quinton McDuffie made good on a lay up for a 73-71 lead with 5:54 to play. The two teams exchanged baskets over the last four minutes of the game. Trailing by two points with :28 seconds to play, the Hawks Travis Willliams forced a turnover, drove the court, and found Jerry Fairley who made a fast break lay up to tie the game at 84. The Bronco's Andre Best spread the floor and drove the lane to find an open Herrington who banked in a lay up for an 86-82 lead with :03 to play. Chowan turned the ball over on the inbounds pass and then was whistled with a quick foul. Tim Plummer hit two foul shots to ice the game for Fayetteville State at 88-84.
 
Chowan was led by MsDuffie's game-high 25 points. He also had three assists and five rebounds. Charles Rhodes scored 15 points while Williams ended the game with 13 points and three assists. Deandre Tyree notched his second double double of the season with 15 board and 10 points.
 
For FSU, both Tate and Herrington scored 17 points. Herrington also hauled in 15 boards.
 
Chowan (1-9, 0-2) will take off from play until January 13th when they travel to Winston-Salem State University in a CIAA divisional cross over match. Tip off for that game is set for 7:30pm. Fayetteville State University (5-5, 2-1) will travel over to play Elizabeth City State University for a Monday night 7:30pm tip off.
