Box Score MURFREESBORO – The Chowan Men's Basketball team fell to 1-17 (0-10 CIAA, 0-4 North) following a 96-44 loss at home to Virginia Union University Saturday night. The Panthers improve to 8-6 (6-3 CIAA, 3-1 North) with the win. VUU dominated from the opening tip, jumping out to an early 16-3 lead. The Hawks fought back midway through the first half, closing the scoring gap to 10 at 21-11, following four straight
Deandre Tyree points. From there, it was all Panthers, as they put together two separate 15-2 runs to close the half. At the break, VUU held a 54-19 advantage.
The second half began much like the first, with Virginia Union going on a 14-4 run to open the stanza. Smothering defense by the Panthers and poor shooting from Chowan allowed VUU to continually break the game wide open in the second half. With Virginia Union starters pulled, the Hawks managed an 8-1 run over a 4:25 span late in the game.
Chowan was led by
Deandre Tyree, who posted 13 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. VUU placed five players in double figures, led by Braxton Byerson who tallied 25. For the game, Chowan was held to 1-17 shooting from beyond the arc and 16-50 from the floor. Virginia Union shot 50% from the floor, and converted 31 points off Chowan turnovers.
The Hawks return to action Monday night, when they host CIAA North foe Saint Paul's College. Tip-off is set for 7:30pm in the Helms Center. VUU will host Lincoln University (PA) Monday night at 7:30pm.
