LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA – The Chowan Hawks Women's Basketball team remained hot with a 55-50 road victory against Lincoln University Monday night. The win is Chowan's third in four games, and brings their overall record to 7-9. The Hawks are 4-4 in the CIAA (2-0 North). With the loss, the Lady Lions fall to 1-14 overall and 0-8 in Conference play (0-2 North).
After falling behind early, the Hawks took the lead at the 17:11 mark after a layup by sophomore guard
Talaya Lynch. They would not trail the rest of the game. Lynch's basket sparked a 9-0 run to put Chowan up 9-2 with 15:07 remaining in the first half. The Lady Lions were not to be outdone, however, as they went on a run of their own to cut the lead to two with just over 11 minutes on the first half clock.
The two teams traded baskets the remaining of the half, which ended with Lincoln star Sharay DuBose nailing three free throws after being fouled with one second on the clock. Due in large part to a stellar defensive performance, the Hawks took a 25-23 lead into intermission. Chowan held Lincoln to just 26.7% shooting in the half.
The second half began much like the first, with Chowan going on an early run to widen the scoring gap to eight with 15:54 remaining. The Lady Lions once again showed their grit and twice cut the lead down to two points, the latter coming at the 11:13 mark. Chowan responded to the Lincoln surge by going on an 8-0 run to lead 50-39.
Up 54-43 with 5:17 left in the second half, the Hawks relied on their defense to seal the victory. Lincoln held Chowan without a field goal the rest of the way, but only managed seven points themselves and came up short in the end.
Chowan capitalized on Lincoln turnovers, scoring 20 points off the Lady Lions' miscues. The Hawks held Lincoln to just 30.8% shooting for the game.
Najah Harris and
Ransheda Jennings led the way for the Hawks by scoring 14 points apiece. Jennings also added a team high six rebounds and four blocks in the win. Lincoln was led by Sharay DuBose who tallied 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. DuBose broke the 1,000 point barrier in the game while playing all 40 minutes.
