Chowan Hangs Tough, falls to Lincoln 75-62

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA – The Chowan Men's Basketball team played a tough first half before eventually falling to host Lincoln University Monday night, 75-62.The Hawks came out of the gate strong, scoring six of the game's first seven points. Two Deandre Tyree free throws put Chowan up 9-3 at the 16:31 mark. Lincoln (2-13, 1-7 CIAA, 1-1 North) quickly responded with a 10-0 run of their own to go up 17-11 with 10:44 remaining in the half. Not to be outdone, the Hawks clamped down on defense and regained the lead after a Jerry Fairley layup with 5:29 remaining on the clock. Neither team could pull away at the end of the half, and the score was knotted at 30 going into intermission.
 
With the score tied at 34 with 18:16 remaining in the second half, the Lions took control by going on a 12-2 run, capped by Terron Jones layup at the 14:28 mark. The Hawks would refuse to go away lightly, as an Anton Shoetan three pointer brought Chowan back within seven to halt the Lion rally.
 
After Lincoln built up a 14 point lead at the 9:42 mark of the half, Chowan scored their next six points in the paint and cut the Lion lead to eight with 7:54 left. Lincoln proved to have too much firepower down the stretch, though, as they hit 15 of 18 free throws over the final seven minutes of the game, sealing the home victory.
 
Sophomore forward Quinton McDuffie led Chowan with 11 points on 5-8 shooting. Deandre Tyree, Aaron Allen, and Joseph Hassell each pulled down four rebounds for the Hawks. For the game, Chowan shot 41.4% from the floor and was aided by 36 points off the bench.
 
Lincoln was led by Eugene Smith, who notched team highs with 24 points and 7 rebounds. Smith was extremely efficient as well, shooting 9-11 from the floor and 6-7 from the free throw line.
 
Chowan (1-15, 0-8 CIAA, 0-2 North) travels to Elizabeth City for a matchup against the rival Vikings on Thursday night. Tipoff is set for 7:30pm. Next on the slate for Lincoln is a Thursday night tilt with Bowie State University in Bowie, MD. Tipoff is set for 7:30pm.
