Box Score CHARLOTTE, NC - The Saint Augustine's College Falcons proved why they came into the 2010 CIAA Tournament as the top team in the CIAA this year after strong holding Chowan 84-62 in tonight's second semi-final match up. With the win, the Falcons advance to the Championship game tomorrow night at 6:00pm where the Elizabeth City State University Vikings await them.
The Hawks got on the board first in the game when Lando Morrison grabbed an offensive board and stuck it back in for a 2-0 lead. Morrison went on to score the Hawks first nine points of the game before getting in foul trouble. With the score knotted at 9-9 the Falcons? Chris Jordan drained a three pointer to give his team a 12-9 lead at the 16:30 mark of the first period. The Hawks offensive effort went dry when they went more than six minutes without a field goal. Their scoring came from the foul line and the Falcons first double digit lead came at the 6:20 mark at 30-20 when Hayward Fain hit two shots from the foul line. Jaleel Nelson finally ended a field goal drought for Chowan when Nelson drove the lane for a score at the 5:00 mark. Jordan gave the Falcons a 40-32 lead at the half when he hit a three pointer at the buzzer.
The Falcons dominated the glass in the first half, getting 24 rebounds and 18 second chance points. They also took advantage of Hawks miscues with 12 points off of six Chowan turnovers in the first half. Jordan scored 12 first half points while Nelson scored 11 points, seven from the foul line.
Saint Augustine's came out to play in the second half and gained their largest lead of the game at 14 points with 10:33 to play after Keith McCallister drained two free throws. Behind the shooting performances of Jordan and Shaun Wasum, the Falcons kept their lead at double digits for the remainder of the second half. The Hawks struggled on the boards throughout the game and were out rebounded by more than 20 rebounds.
Morrison ended the game leading all scorers with 24 points while Nelson scored 17 points and dished out six assists. Jordan posted 20 points to lead the Falcons while Shaun Washum scored 14 points.
Saturday's Championship game will be aired on ESPN U at 6:00pm.
Chowan?s season comes to an end at 18-10 while Saint Augustine?s improves to 25-4 on the year.
