ELIZABETH CITY, NC - After a valiant comeback attempt over the second half, the women's basketball teams' efforts fell just short as they lost to Elizabeth City State University 59-50 in CIAA cross over action this evening. Freshman
Talaya Lynch scored 11 second half points and 19 over the game in the loss. Tonight's loss moves the Hawks to 7-9 overall and 4-7 in league play.
After trailing 33-21 at halftime, the Hawks opened the second half with an 8-2 run after Lynch and
Naomi Walters drained back-to-back three's.
Najah Harris gave the Hawks a lay up to cap off the run and pull Chowan within striking distance of the Lady Vikings.
The Hawks tied the game for the first time of the second half around the 12:00 mark after a 7-0 run with baskets by Walters, Lynch, and
Taylor Hughes. The two teams exchanged buckets over the next seven minutes but the Lady Vikings pulled away from Chowan over the final five minutes of play to take the game.
Chowan struggled from the floor in the game, hitting 30% (19-63) from the field and 5-22 from three point land. The Lady Vikings hit for 40% in the game and out rebounded Chowan 45-37.
Talaya Lynch scored 19 points and had four steals and Walters ended the night with 11 points. Harris grabbed nine boards to go with nine points.
The Hawks will hit the court again on Monday, January 25th, when they travel to Saint Pauls College for a 5:30pm tip off. That game will be played at Brunswick Senior High School in Lawrenceville, Virginia.
The Lady Vikings improve to 11-5 overall and 7-5 in league play after tonight's game.
