Box Score MURFREESBORO - Chowan University dropped their season opening game against #19 Albany State University with a final score of 36-21. Albany State took advantage of six Hawks' turnovers in the game, putting up 24 points alone on Hawks' miscues.
Chowan struck first in the game when CJ Westler hit Kevin Robledo across the seam for a 48 yard scamper to the endzone at the 7:43 mark of the first quarter. Cory Cline made good on the point after attempt to go up 7-0 on the Golden Rams. Albany State went to work on their next possession to knot the game at 7-7 when ASU's AJ McKenna found an open Demetrice Johnson for a 14 yard strike. Patrick Cuff split the uprights to tie the game closing the first quater.
On the Hawks first possession of the second quarter Chowan lined up for a 36 yard field goal but Westler, as the holder, rolled out and found a wide open Kjuan Hollman in the endzone to take a 13-7 lead. Cline once again scored on the point after attempt to take a 14-7 lead.
The Hawks' lead would be temporary as ASU posted 17 second quater points, 10 of which came off turnovers. ASU took a 24-14 lead into the half.
Johnson posted scores in both the 3rd and 4th quarters to give ASU a 36-14 lead heading in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. The Hawks put together a 3:36 drive with a Westler to Robledo connection in the far endzone from 20 yards out to end the game. Cline split to the uprights to make the final score 36-21.
Chowan tallied 257 yards of offense in the game, 205 yards through the air and 52 yards gained on the ground. Westler tossed three touchdowns while also throwing three interceptions in the loss. He completed 20 of 37 passes in the game. ASU's AJ McKenna accounted for 210 of the Golden Rams yards as he completed 13 of 23 passes with two touchdowns.
Elliot Smalls led the ground attack for Chowan with 37 yards on seven carries. Robledo finished the game with two touchdowns and 106 receiving yards on seven catches. For ASU, Johnson caught four passes for 80 yards and three scores.

Andrae DeWeese had 4.5 tackles each while Greg Palmer had three tackles with a sack.
The Hawks (0-1) will travel to Old Dominion next Saturday for a 6:00pm match up while the Golden Rams (1-0) will host Kentucky State in Albany, GA.
