Box Score MURFREESBORO - Despite erasing a 16 point second half deficit and forcing four ties, the Hawks fell in a battle with Catawba College tonight 66-63. Lando Morrison collected a game-high 21 points and had 16 rebounds in the loss. The Hawks got out of the gate slow as they scored just 23 first half points and hit 21% from the field. They rebounded late in the second half to force four ties over the final eight minutes of play but it was Catawba who would prevail tonight.
Trailing by a point with 8:57 to play in the game Chowan's
Mark Brown nailed a baseline three pointer to give Chowan it's first lead of the game at 49-47. Catawba stretched their lead over the next six minutes to 63-55. Brown made good on a lay up and
Lando Morrison hit 3-4 at the foul line to tie the game with :48 to play. Catawba's Rob Fields hit 1-2 from the foul line to get a 64-63 lead with :37 to play. With the shot clock in their favor the Hawks went down court trailing by one but turned the ball over and were forced to foul. Cameron Lovelace hit both free throws for Catawba to put the game away at 66-63.
The Hawks hit shots at a 31% clip tonight (15-49) while Catawba edged them with 43% (19-44). Both teams had 34 rebounds with Chowan grabbing 11 offensive boards to Catawba's seven.
Jaleel Nelson scored 11 points and had three steals while Brown and
Anton Shoetan each chipped in 10 points.
For Catawba, Antonio Houston tallied 21 points on 5-7 from three point land. Chowan moves to 4-4 after today's non-conference loss while Catawba improves to 6-5.
The Hawks will hit the court again on Saturday, January 2nd, as the Tigers from Saint Pauls College come to Murfreesboro for a CIAA cross-divisional match up. Tip off for the men's game is set for 4:00pm. The women will tip it up at 2:00pm with the Lady Tigers.
