Bowie State Hangs on to Beat Hawks

Jaleel Nelson had 23 points in tonight's game
Box Score MURFREESBORO - The Bowie State Bulldogs held off a surging Chowan team to down the Hawks at home 76-71. Key free throw shooting down the stretch helped put the game out of reach for Chowan in the final three minutes of the contest. The Hawks move to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in CIAA play while BSU improves to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. BSU spread the scoring amongst eight players and Andrew Engel hit six free throws in the waning minutes to help propel his team to their first season victory. 

BSU was 22-31 from the foul line, which proved to the be the difference in the game for Chowan. The Hawks hit more field goals in the match up couldn't quite recover from the Bulldogs foul line presence. 

Jaleel Nelson fought for a game-high 23 points for Chowan while Layth Mansour came off the bench to chip in 12 points. Mark Brown added 11 points and five rebounds in the game. 

Chowan won the battle of the boards with 41 rebounds to Bowie State's 37. The Hawks hit 42% from the field and also had eight different players contribute baskets in the loss. 

The Hawks will host Lincoln University on Monday, November 23rd at 7:30pm while Bowie State travels to Fayetteville State for a 7:30pm Monday night tip off.
