MURFREESBORO - The women's softball team split a double header with UNC-Pembroke this afternoon, moving them to 4-2 on the year. Chowan lost the opening game 13-2 but battled back to win the night cap 6-4.
Chowan held a 3-2 lead heading into the top of the 5th inning but UNC-Pembroke scored 11 runs over their next two at-bats to take the game 13-2. Chowan was held to two hits in the game with Melissa Woodrum and Nichole Young each tallying one hit. Shellie Wimpey pitched in the loss, allowing 9 earned runs, 10 walks, but striking out 7 batters. Wimpey moves to 1-2 on the year.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Hawks used a three-run at-bat to take a 3-1 lead. UNC-P scored 3 more runs two at-bats later to take a 4-3 lead. Chowan stepped up to score 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to take the lead and eventual win. Laura Griffin doubled to score 2 of those runs after pinch hitting with two outs in the bottom of the 4th inning.
Sara Teh pitched 5 innings, giving up 7 hits, giving up 4 runs, and striking out 4 batters. Teh moves to 3-0 after the win. Chowan improves to 4-2 while UNC-Pembroke moves to 6-6 on the year.
The Hawks will host Elizabeth City State University on Sunday at 2:00pm.
