Softball Splits Opener with Sweetbriar

MURFREESBORO - The softball team opened their 2007 campaign with a doubleheader split against Sweetbriar College this afternoon. The Hawks now sit at 1-1 heading into their next match up with Virginia State on Monday.

Chowan got a solid pitching performance from sophomore Shellie Wimpey who struck out 11 batters in the first game. She scattered 4 hits over the 7 innings she pitched. Offensively the Hawks were held to four hits in the game, led by freshmen Kaytee McLaughlin and Laura Griffin who both tallied 2 hits. Wimpey picked up the loss on the mound.

The pitching proved to be vital in game two of the double dip as Sara Teh threw a complete game, shut out to help propel her team to a 1-0 victory. Teh scattered 4 hits and struck out 7 over the 7 innings she was on the mound. McLaughlin was 2-2 at the plate and had the game-winning hit in the 5th inning. She doubled in Wimpey who singled to start the inning. Melissa Woodrum added a single in the game, which featured just four Chowan hits.

The Hawks will host Virginia State on Monday at 2:00pm in their next match up. After today's doubleheader Chowan's overall record is 1-1.
