Murfreesboro, NC – Chowan College will host Methodist College in the first-ever Atlantic Central Football Conference (ACFC) game on Saturday, September 5, 1998 at James G. Garrison Stadium. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.
The Braves and the Monarchs have developed quite an intra-state rivalry over the years, but no game has had more significance than this history - making contest. The ACFC is a football only conference comprised of Chowan, Methodist, Frostburg State, Ferrum, Salisbury State and Wesley. The conference will not crown a champion this season, but will recognize outstanding individual accomplishments with a number of awards and honors.
The 1998 season marks the beginning a new era for Chowan College football. Steve Lee enters his first season at the helm of the Braves program and he expects to bring a new and exciting brand of football to Chowan. The strength of this year's team will be the defense, led by an outstanding core of returning linebackers. Seniors Jamie Rodgers, Dan Stockner and Chris Coleman will be joined by sophomore Abdul Azin Shebazz-Wiggins to form this impressively talented group which boasts great speed and strength. Offensively, senior QB Chris Dent returns for his fourth year as the Braves signal caller. Dent will have a talented group of receivers as targets. Junior Danny Inscoe, the Braves number one receiver a year ago, will be joined by junior Jeremy Forbes to form an explosive tandem.
Methodist is coming off their most successful season in school history. Head Coach Jim Sypult welcomes back 14 starters from last year's 9-1 squad. The Monarchs are led by senior QB Brian Turner, who is the school's all-time leader in passing yards (3,747) and passing touchdowns (28). Defensively, All-American SS Trayfer Moore will lead a cast of eight returning starters.
Last season, Methodist defeated Chowan 25-20 in Fayetteville, NC.
