David Rogers enters his fifth season as the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach and second as Head Coach of the JV Men’s Basketball program.
In 2019-2020, Rogers mentored BJ McLaurin to Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-Conference Honors. McLaurin became the first player in program history to average a double-double with 16.6 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. McLaurin went on to break the all-time single-season rebound record with 292 rebounds. Jaylen Dilliard would tie the school record in a single-game with a perfect 11-11 from the floor on his way to a program best 37 points against eventual league tournament champion, Southern Wesleyan.
During the 2018-19 season, Rogers helped mentor Gus Rowland to another program record. Rowland broke the single-season record for assists (194) to lead the CIAA and finish in second in the country in assists per game (7.2). Rowland would also become the Division II all-time assist leader at Chowan with 305 and single-season record holder for steals with 65.
In the 2017-2018 season, Rogers helped guide Gus Rowland to CIAA Rookie of the Week honors five times, and Demetrius Sanders CIAA Player of the Week once. Sanders would be rewarded after a 12-12 performance from the floor to set the school record for a single-game field goal percentage mark.
Dino Muminovic finished the season with a Division II program record 76 blocks. Muminovic led the CIAA in blocks and ranked sixth in the country. Muminovic was fifth in the country with 2.81 blocks per game. Serving as Academic Coordinator, Rogers helped guide the team to the highest men’s basketball GPA in the CIAA with an average of 3.36.
In 2016-2017, Rogers made an immediate impact, helping mentor Marco Haskins and Jeremy Smith to ALL-CIAA Team honors. That season, the Hawks averaged the most points per game in a single-season with 78.8 points.
Prior to Chowan, Rogers spent the 2015-2016 season on the women’s side at West Virginia Wesleyan. In his one season there he helped guide forward Mari Stewart to First Team Mountain East Honors. Stewart would go on to play professionally overseas.
Before West Va. Wesleyan, Rogers worked in his hometown of Petersburg, West Virginia. Rogers served as an Athletic Coordinator and a coach of multiple athletic teams at Petersburg Middle and Petersburg High School. While at Petersburg, Rogers guided the basketball team to a 35-5 record. Rogers would help the school claim six conference championships (tennis (3), basketball (2), and football (1)). The tennis program had three players finish as runner-up in the State tournament, as well as, an individual state champion.
From 2002-2009 Rogers served as Director of Basketball Operations/Video Coordinator at Fairmont State University. He played an integral role on a staff that had nine former players reach the professional ranks, including All-American Thad McFadden. The Fairmont State basketball program earned 139 wins during Rogers’ time on staff.
Rogers is a native of Petersburg, W.Va. He resides in Murfreesboro with his dog Buster.
