Alex Lewis enters his third season as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach and Head Developmental Basketball Coach at Chowan University.

Since joining the Hawks’ coaching staff in July 2024 under Head Coach Rob Burke, Lewis has brought a strong background in player development and has played an instrumental role in the program’s recent success.

During the 2025-26 season, Lewis helped guide the Hawks to an 18-14 overall record and a 13-7 finish in Conference Carolinas play. He was instrumental in leading the program to its first-ever appearance in the Conference Carolinas Championship Game, highlighted by postseason victories over Southern Wesleyan, King, and UNC Pembroke. Damerius Summers would tab first team All-Conference honors at the end of the regular season as Damien Robinson and Eric Gordon Jr. would be named to the All-Tournament Team concluding post season play.

In the 2024-25 campaign, Lewis helped lead Chowan to an 18-10 overall record and a 14-6 mark in league play. Several Hawks achieved major milestones during his first season with the program, including Daylen Askew becoming Chowan’s Division II all-time leading scorer while also earning the first Conference Carolinas Player of the Year honor in program history. The Hawks advanced to the semifinals of the Atlantic Casualty Conference Carolinas Men’s Basketball Championship, while 14 student-athletes were named to the Conference Carolinas Presidential Spring Honor Roll for their academic achievements.

Lewis is a native of Newport News, Virginia, and his basketball career started early. It flourished while he was a standout player at Menchville High School and Lynchburg College, where he graduated in 2016 with a B.A. in Sport Management. He continued his playing career with the Hampton Roads Warriors as a semi-professional player, which solidified his deep understanding of the game.

Lewis has plenty of experience coaching at all levels. He held notable positions at Gloucester High School and Phoebus High School, where he had a major impact on the growth of players and the success of the teams. He demonstrated his ability to succeed at a high level in competitive environments at Combine Academy, where he helped lead the National Team to victory in the HoopState Championship.

Along with his high school coach experience, Lewis has several years of experience at both the JUCO and NCAA D3 ranks. He played a very important role as Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Christopher Newport University, where in 2020, the team made a memorable run to the NCAA Division 3 Sweet 16. Lewis also had stops at Eastern Mennonite University and Bryant & Stratton College.

Lewis has expertise in player development, scouting technology, and strategic coaching to assist the men's basketball program at Chowan.
