Alex Lewis enters his second season as the assistant men's basketball coach and head developmental basketball coach.
During the 2024-25 season, Lewis assisted the Hawks to a 18-10 overall record and a 14-6 record in league play. In his first season many Hawks made major accomplishments, etching their names higher up in Chowan's record book. Noteably, Daylen Askew became Chowan's Division II all-time leading scorer, also collecting the first Conference Carolinas Player of the Year honor in program history. The Hawks made an appearance in the Atlantic Casualty Conference Carolinas Men's Basketball Championship, advancing to the semifinals. They would go on to earn 14 individuals on Conference Carolinas Presidential Spring Honor Roll for their academic achievements .
Chowan University's men's basketball coach, Rob Burke, announced in July 2024 that Alex Lewis will be joining the staff as the new Assistant Men's Basketball Coach. Bringing with him a diverse coaching background and a strong interest in player development, Lewis is sure to help take the team to new heights.Â
Lewis is a native of Newport News, Virginia, and his basketball career started early. It flourished while he was a standout player at Menchville High School and Lynchburg College, where he graduated in 2016 with a B.A. in Sport Management. He continued his playing career with the Hampton Roads Warriors as a semi-professional player, which solidified his deep understanding of the game.
Lewis has plenty of experience coaching at all levels. He held notable positions at Gloucester High School and Phoebus High School, where he had a major impact on the growth of players and the success of the teams. He demonstrated his ability to succeed at a high level in competitive environments at Combine Academy, where he helped lead the National Team to victory in the HoopState Championship.
Along with his high school coach experience, Lewis has several years of experience at both the JUCO and NCAA D3 ranks. He played a very important role as Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Christopher Newport University, where in 2020, the team made a memorable run to the NCAA Division 3 Sweet 16. Lewis also had stops at Eastern Mennonite University and Bryant & Stratton College.
Lewis will bring his expertise in player development, scouting technology, and strategic coaching to assist the men's basketball program at Chowan. He will also head up the developmental team.
