Hawks Sweep UNC Pembroke in Conference Doubleheader at Home

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Chowan University softball team shut down UNC Pembroke, earning a conference doubleheader sweep over the Braves on Tuesday afternoon at Hawks Field. The Hawks held UNC Pembroke scoreless in a 3-0 game one victory before securing a 6-2 win in game two, highlighted by four scoreless innings to close it out.

Ava Mizell tied the program's single-season stolen base record (42) in game two, swiping third before scoring on a failed pickoff attempt. The junior added the final run of the game to seal the 6-2 decision.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE 

Game One 

Chowan struck first in the second inning as Calliope James crossed the plate following a UNC Pembroke throwing error. The Hawks added two more runs in the fifth, with Hydee Kugler scoring before Kyra Helton capped the inning with an RBI single off the bat of Kaitlyn Springle.

Ava Mizell, Hope Soria, and Lenita Bryson each recorded a hit, while Kugler added a hit and a run scored. Springle tallied a hit and an RBI, and Helton contributed both a run and an RBI.

Makenzi Curry earned the win in the circle, tossing six shutout innings while allowing just two hits. Abby Rutledge closed the door with a scoreless seventh inning to secure the save.

Game Two

After a quiet start through two innings, the Hawks gained momentum in the third. Mizell sparked the rally with an RBI single, later scoring in the inning. Kaitlyn Springle crossed the plate on a bunt single by Alexis Denham, while Lexie Ritchie added another run after entering as a pinch runner. Hydee Kugler extended the lead on a sacrifice bunt from Bailey Weston, and Mizell added another run in the sixth.

Mizell led the way with two hits, two runs, and an RBI, while Kugler matched her with two hits and two runs scored. Helton added two hits and an RBI, and Springle contributed a hit, a run, and an RBI. Denham recorded a hit and an RBI, while Curry added a hit and Ritchie scored a run.

Emily Fowler started in the circle, pitching two innings before Rutledge took over for the final five. Rutledge was dominant, allowing no runs and striking out four to earn the win and improve to 10-2 on the season.

UP NEXT 

The Hawks return to action on Saturday, April 11, hosting King University for a doubleheader at CU Softball Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM, followed by game two at 3:00 PM.
