Egan Buries Game-Winner in Final Second to Lift Hawks Past Dragons

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan University men's lacrosse team delivered a thrilling and strong finish on Wednesday afternoon, edging Tiffin University 12-11 in non-conference action.

With just one second remaining, Thomas Rohal passed to Todd Egan, and Egan buried the game-winner to lift the Hawks to their first home victory of the season.

Chowan wasted no time setting the tone. Just 44 seconds into the contest (14:16), Rohal connected with Seth MacKenzie for the game's opening goal. Less than a minute later, Rohal added one of his own off a feed from Egan to give the Hawks an early 2-0 lead. Rohal struck again at the 1:04 mark of the first quarter, this time assisted by MacKenzie, as Chowan carried a 3-2 lead into the second.

The Hawks found their rhythm in the second quarter, posting four goals. Scott Cathcart started the surge with an unassisted tally at 6:42. Treston Gatewood followed at 5:44 on a pass from MacKenzie. Reed Low extended the advantage with Egan earning the assist, and Justin Hill capped the quarter with a strong individual effort at the one-minute mark. Chowan headed into halftime with a 7-5 advantage.

After the break, Low added his second goal of the contest at 10:56 in the third quarter, once again set up by Egan. However, the Dragons responded with three goals to even the score at 8-8 entering the final period.

The fourth quarter came down to the wire as Rohal gave Chowan a 9-8 lead with an unassisted strike at 13:11, but Tiffin answered with back-to-back goals to pull ahead. Isaiah Gill tied the score at 10-10 with an unassisted goal at 9:29, yet the Dragons reclaimed the lead, 11-10, with just over three minutes to play.

MacKenzie evened things up at 3:25, scoring off a Cathcart assist. After a key Tiffin turnover with 44 seconds remaining, the Hawks worked the ball patiently around the perimeter. Rohal delivered a pass to Egan, who fired the decisive shot into the back of the net as time expired, sealing the 12-11 victory.

Rohal led the attack with three goals and two assists, while Egan recorded the game-winning goal and dished out three assists. MacKenzie added two goals and two assists, and Low finished with two goals. Cathcart tallied a goal and an assist, while Hill contributed a goal.

Defensively, Michael Litchfield scooped up four ground balls and caused a turnover. Harry Edwards collected five ground balls and forced two turnovers. In goal, Rocco Smith played all 60 minutes, recording 13 saves and adding two ground balls to secure the win.

Chowan returns to action on Saturday, March 7, hosting Shorter University for Senior Day at the Soccer/Lacrosse Complex. Opening faceoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
