Hawks Tussle with Shepherd but Fall Short in Season Opener

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Chowan University baseball team made their 2026 debut on Monday afternoon as they played host to Shepherd University in a non-conference match up. Chowan battled in the game, coming from behind to take the game's lead two times, before ultimately, Shepherd used a four-run 5th inning to spread their lead and hold on to the eventual win. Chowan scored six runs over their last three at-bats but came up one run short, losing 12-11 to fall to 0-1 on the young season.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE 

Chowan collected 8 hits in the nine inning game, led by Nick Reiss who finished up 2-5 with four RBI. Reiss took his first at-bat of 2026 and made it count with a two-run blast over the left field fence to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead after two innings. Ahmaad Goldson finished the game 2-5 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI, including two doubles. Ty Boze scored three runs and collected a hit and an RBI in the game. Ethan Robinson finished the game 1-2 with two RBI while teammate Nicholas Nichols collected a hit in the game. 

Teray Cherry got the start on the mound for the Hawks. He came away with the no decision after tossing 2.2 innings, giving up five hits and five runs while striking out five Ram batters. Kelton Taylor was credited with the loss after coming in for relief of Cherry. Taylor threw 2.2 innings, striking out two batters. Ethan Pukas tossed a gem in relief for the Hawks. He pitched 3.2 innings, scattering four hits, one run, and striking out three batters. 

UP NEXT 

The Hawks will return to Hawkins Field on Tuesday, February 10th to host Shepherd University in the final two games of the three-game series. First pitch is slated for 11:00am at Hawkins Field. Tuesday's match up features two seven inning games.
