Savage Posts Career-High in Hawks’ Road Win Over Warriors

CENTRAL, S.C. –  The Chowan University women's basketball team secured an 80-71 road victory over Southern Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks got out to a quick 8-0 run and went on to outscore the Warriors in the first, second, and fourth quarters to maintain control throughout the contest behind a career-high day from Nyeisha Savage. With the win, Chowan improves to 11-7 overall and 9-5 in Conference Carolinas play.

Nyeisha Savage delivered a career-high 25-point performance to lead the Hawks on both ends of the floor. She shot an efficient 11-15 from the field and 3-4 from the free throw line while adding nine rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. Yasmine Brown and Alexandria James-Fearon each contributed 11 points, with James-Fearon recording a season high. Brown got the offense going in the first quarter and finished 5-6 from the free throw line, dishing out six assists to go along with five rebounds and a steal. James-Fearon connected on 5-8 shooting while collecting five rebounds, two steals, and an assist. Desiree Askew also reached double figures with 10 points on 3-5 shooting and added eight rebounds. Aquarius Pettaway added nine points on a perfect 3-3 effort from the field and knocked down three free throws while grabbing four rebounds.

As a team, the Hawks shot 43.1 percent from the field and 69.4 percent from the free throw line. Chowan dominated inside with 44 points in the paint and controlled the glass with 42 rebounds, including 25 second-chance points. The Hawks also capitalized on turnovers scoring 21 points and added 12 fast-break points.

The Hawks will travel to Florence, S.C., to face Francis Marion University on Tuesday, February 10. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
