Hawks Swoop In Caging Panthers 48–44 in Thrilling Home Victory

MURFREESBORO, N.C. — The Chowan University women's basketball team picked up a thrilling victory over East Division opponent Ferrum College on Friday evening. With the win, the Hawks improved to 7–5 in conference play.

Chowan opened the game scoring the first two baskets and controlling the tempo over the opening five minutes to outscore Ferrum 13–9 in the first quarter. The second quarter began with a three-pointer from Daneesha Briggs off a pass from Jade Clowney, who followed on the next possession by knocking down a three of her own. The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half, heading into the break with Ferrum holding a 27-25 advantage.

The third quarter featured evenly matched play, as both teams were limited to six points apiece. Offense picked up in the fourth quarter, where the Hawks delivered their strongest scoring frame. Chowan made six trips to the free-throw line in the final period, converting 9-of-12 attempts. With five seconds remaining, Yasmine Brown calmly sank two free throws to seal the victory and secure the Hawks' seventh conference win of the season.

Nyeisha Savage led Chowan offensively with a team-high 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting, adding nine rebounds and two blocks while going 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Brown finished with eight points on a perfect night at the stripe, along with two assists and a steal. Daneesha Briggs provided a spark off the bench, scoring seven points on 3-of-5 shooting while adding two assists and a block. Jade Clowney knocked down two three-pointers, shooting 50 percent (2-4) from beyond the arc, and contributed an assist to close out the game.

The Hawks dominated the glass with 42 total rebounds, including 29 on the defensive end. Chowan also capitalized on key opportunities, scoring 14 points off Ferrum turnovers, 20 points in the paint, 13 second-chance points, eight fast-break points, and 22 points from the bench.

The Hawks return to action on Saturday, January 31, as they close out the month on the road in Spartanburg, South Carolina, taking on conference opponent Converse University at 2:00 PM.
