Hawks Drop Contest on the Road to Crusaders

BELMONT, N.C. — The Chowan University women's basketball team fell to conference opponent Belmont Abbey College on Saturday afternoon. Two Hawks reached double figures to pace the Chowan offense.

Belmont Abbey opened the contest with an early run in the first quarter before Chowan answered by trading baskets to settle into the game. In the second quarter, the Hawks continued to generate offense, but the Crusaders built momentum and carried a 34–23 advantage into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Chowan's offense came alive, scoring the first two baskets of the third quarter to cut the deficit to six. After a stretch of free throws and quick scores on both ends, the game headed into the fourth quarter with momentum beginning to shift.

The Hawks outscored the Crusaders 17–16 in the final period, but ultimately came up short as the contest concluded with a 63–56 final score.

Yasmine Brown led Chowan with 11 points, six rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Alexandria James-Fearon followed with 10 points on an efficient 4-of-5 shooting performance, going 2-for-2 from the free-throw line while adding five steals, three rebounds, and two blocks.

Nyeisha Savage contributed eight points and seven rebounds, shooting 2-for-2 at the line, along with two assists, one block, and one steal. Wisdom Banks and Desiree Askew chipped in seven and six points, respectively, with Banks connecting on her lone three-point attempt and Askew shooting 3-for-4 from the field. Jade Clowney added six points in just six minutes of action, going 2-for-3 from the floor and knocking down two key three-pointers.

As a team, the Hawks recorded 28 points in the paint, 23 bench points, 20 points off turnovers, eight fast-break points, and seven second-chance points.

The Hawks return to action on Monday, January 19, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as they host King University with tip-off set for 3:00 PM in the Hawks Athletic Center.
