Savage Garners Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Week Honors

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Conference Carolinas office announced its Week 5 Men's and Women's Basketball Players of the Week on Monday afternoon, with Chowan University earning recognition following the Hawks' two contests last week.

Nyeisha Savage was named Defensive Player of the Week after a standout performance that helped lead the Hawks to two conference wins.

The Offensive Player of the Week honor was awarded to King University.

Savage was solid on the defensive end in a pair of Chowan wins last week, averaging 9.0 rebounds while adding seven blocks and one steal. She opened the week with eight rebounds, one steal, and four blocks in a win over Mount Olive, then followed with a dominant presence against North Greenville, pulling down 10 rebounds and recording three blocks. Her consistency on the glass has been a key factor for the Hawks this season, as Savage currently ranks third in the conference in rebounding with 93 total boards through 11 games, including 62 on the defensive end. She has also been one of the conference's top rim protectors, ranking second in blocked shots with 22 on the season, averaging two blocks per game.

Hawkins averaged a double-double in a pair of King wins last week. In two games she averaged 21.0 points and 11.0 rebounds while handing out 17 assists and adding five steals. She also shot 63.6 percent from the floor and 53.3 percent from long range. Her week started with 22 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and four steals while shooting 9-for-12 from the floor and 4-for-7 from long range in a win over North Greenville. She closed the week with 20 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and one steal while shooting 5-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-8 from three in a win over Southern Wesleyan.
