Chowan Women's Basketball Drops Tight Match up to Francis Marion at Home

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Chowan University women's basketball team battled in a tightly contested Conference Carolinas game against Francis Marion University on Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks fell 67-58 after picking up double-digit scoring outings from Wisdom Banks and Yasmine Brown. Banks' 16 points is her season-best. Banks hit 8-18 from the floor and accounted for four of the team's 18 total steals in the game. 

The Hawks brought significant pressure throughout the game, forcing 28 Patriot turnovers and converting those into 27 points in the game. Chowan moved to 3-6 overall and 104 in league play after the game while Francis Marion improved to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in league play.

Chowan took advantage of key turnovers in the first quarter to lead 14-13 after the first quarter of play. The Patriots battled back into game in the second quarter, taking a 34-28 lead into the halftime break. FMU would go on to outscore the Hawks 42-30 in the second half, propelled by a 9-13 shooting performance in the 3rd quarter. 

Chowan hit 21-72 shots from the floor in the game. The Hawks won the battle of the boards after getting 55 total rebounds. Desiree Askew paced the Hawks on the glass in the game. Askew finished the game to lead all-rebounders with 11 total rebounds in the game. She also had nine points and a blocked shot. Yasmin Brown continued to paced the Hawks on the defensive front. Brown grabbed six steals to go with her 14 points. Banks scored a team-high 16 points, grabbed six rebounds, and had four steals. Alexandria James-Fearon had four steals and six rebounds while Aquarius Pettaway had seven rebounds and seven points in the game. 

UP NEXT 

The Hawks will take time off for winter break before returning to hard court with a road trip to Shorter University on January 3rd. They will look to defend Bob Burke Court again when they host back-to-back Conference Carolinas games on January 7th and January 10th with the University of Mount Olive and North Greenville University respectively.
