CU Women's Basketball Earns First Win of the Season in Home Opener Against Panthers

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan University women's basketball team opened its season on a strong note, securing a 66–58 victory over Virginia Union on Monday evening. Daneesha Briggs delivered a standout performance, turning in a career night to help lift the Hawks to the win. With the victory, Chowan moves to 1–0 on the season and will look to build on the early momentum.

Daneesha Briggs delivered a big performance for the Hawks, knocking down 6–9 from beyond the arc and going a perfect 4–4 at the free-throw line to total a team-high 22 points. The junior set a new career high, surpassing her previous mark of 19 points from her freshman season. Yasmine Brown added eight points, while Nyeisha Savage contributed seven points and pulled down nine rebounds. Desiree Askew and Sa'ni Savage also chipped in seven points each, with Ayanna Rutledge and Alexandria James-Fearon finishing with six apiece.

As a team, Chowan posted 26 points in the paint, 10 second-chance points, and a strong 36 points off the bench. The Hawks shot 21–53 from the field, 7–15 from three, and 17--26 at the line. Chowan dominated the glass with a 45–32 rebounding advantage and led by as many as nine points, fueled by an eight-point scoring run to secure the win.
