MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan University men's basketball team secured their first win of the season on day two of the Conference Challenge Tip-Off Classic, defeating Tusculum University on Saturday evening. After trailing by 13 points in the first half, the Hawks responded with a crucial 10-point surge to pull within two at the break.
Chowan carried that momentum into the second half, eventually building an eight-point advantage and maintaining control down the stretch to secure a 75–68 victory over the Pioneers. With the win, the Hawks record improves to 1–1 on the season.

Damerius Summers powered the Hawks offense, posting 18 points on an efficient 8–12 shooting night while pulling down eight rebounds. Damien Robinson made a major impact as well, delivering multiple hustle plays, going 6–7 from the floor, and dominating the defensive boards to finish with seven total rebounds and 13 points. Eric Gordon Jr. had a perfect percentage at the free throw line, going 4–4, adding four assists, and contributing nine points. Israel Powell went a perfect 2–2 from the field and 2–2 from beyond the arc, adding a split at the free-throw line to finish with seven points.
The matchup stayed competitive throughout, producing nine lead changes and three ties. In the first half Chowan shot 51.7% (15–29) from the field and 66.7% (2–3) at the free-throw line. The Hawks carried that efficiency into the second half, improving to 53.8% (14–26) from the floor and hitting 50% (3–6) from beyond the arc, as Gordon, Powell, and Joseph Lezeau II each connected from deep. Chowan also went 61.1% (11–18) from the free throw line after the break.
The Hawks made a strong impact inside the paint, outscoring the Pioneers 42–24. Chowan added 10 second-chance points, 10 fast-break points, and an impressive 43 points from the bench.
