MURFREESBORO, N.C. — The Chowan University community is mourning the loss of longtime supporter, graduate, and trustee, Harvey Reinhardt, who passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2025, after a brief health battle. He leaves behind a legacy of leadership, generosity, and service that will stand the test of time.
Harvey lived a long and purposeful life, supporting causes close to his heart right up until his passing. While he held several institutions dear, none meant more to him than Chowan University and the people who shaped his life there.
A proud member of the Class of 1961, Harvey came to then-Chowan College to play football and baseball out of high school. He was a starter on the football team for two seasons under his "old ball coach," Jim Garrison, and played left field on the baseball team under another favorite, Jerry Hawkins. The love for his former coaches, his teammates, and the lifelong friendships he made along the way remained front and center in Harvey's heart. He often told the story of coming to Chowan with very little but leaving with so much more. To Harvey, Chowan was home, and the people who influenced him as a student stayed close to him throughout his life.
Harvey's dedication to Chowan extended well beyond his student years. He was a longtime member of the Chowan University Board of Trustees, serving nearly two decades, where he served with distinction and enthusiasm, always advocating for student-athletes, coaches, and the mission of the institution.
Harvey was inducted into the Chowan University "Jim Garrison" Hall of Fame in 1998 and was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award. His giving heart and influence can be seen across campus. He was integral in both giving and raising funds for several major projects, including the Pond Center, Garrison Stadium field lights, the CU golf program's simulator room, and most recently, the football team's locker room renovations. Over the years, Harvey supported nearly every athletic program at Chowan, leaving a tangible legacy that continues to enhance the student experience today.
Harvey Reinhardt truly lived larger than life—a devoted alumnus, loyal trustee, and beloved member of the Chowan family whose impact will endure for generations to come.
A visitation will be held on Friday, October 17th, from 10:00am - 11:00am at Seymore Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Mr. Reinhardt's life at 11:00am in the chapel.
