Late Game Heroics Not Enough as Hawks Fall in Season Opener

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Football team dropped a tough 12-9 non-conference decision to Elizabeth City State University on Saturday afternoon. Chowan falls to 0-1 after Saturday's game while the Vikings move to 1-1 on the year. Newcomer Samuel Tagg led all tacklers in the game with 12 total tackles, including one for a loss. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

After trailing 9-0 at the half,  Chowan's Jalen Razor capped off a long drive with a 3 yard paydirt run at the 5:02 mark of the 3rd quarter. Matthew Conord made good on the point after attempt to cut into the Vikings lead 9-7. ECSU spread their lead to 12-7 after a 19 yard field goal in the 4th quarter. 

Good clock management by the Hawks put them in good position to mount a comeback late in the game. The Hawks forced a safety with :30 to play in the game, cutting the Viking lead to 12-9. The Hawks returned the free kick following the safety to the Vikings 45 yard line. Back to back completions set up a 37 yard field goal attempt by Conord with :03 to play in the game. Conord's attempt just missed wide right to give the Vikings their first win of the season.

Rain and sloppy field conditions proved to be an added opponent in the game for the Hawks after they tallied just 164 yards of total offense in the game. Maurice Smith completed 8-15 passes for 63 yards and ran for another 33 yards to lead the ground attack. Jakobe Lane and Jalen Razor rushed for 32 and 24 yards respectively with Razor getting the 3-yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter. Lane led all receivers with 54 yards, including a 21 yard reception as the longest reception in the game. 

Defensively Samuel Tagg led all tacklers with 12 combined stops, including one tackle for a loss. Omari Kinsler posted 11 tackles and Deangelo Woods tallied 8 stops in the game. Donovan Williams and Joshua Gonley had two tackles for a loss with Gonley getting two sacks. 

UP NEXT

Chowan will continue with non-conference play with a match-up against Barton College on September 14th. Kick-off is slated for 6:00pm at Garrison Stadium on the campus of Chowan University.
