CU Newsletter: June 2023

6/7/2023 11:00:00 AM

Dear Hawks Fans,

Summer greetings from the Chowan Athletic Department! What a year the Hawks had but before I highlight our athletic successes of the year, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to each of you for your unwavering support and passion.  Any success that our department experienced this year was not only our success, it was shared in part with each of our supporters.

The winter sports season ended in dramatic fashion with our swim teams, men's and women's basketball teams all making it to the conference tournaments. We saw personal records and school records shattered in the pool and our women's program made it back to the conference tournament quarterfinals hosted at Wofford led by coach Lenise Stallings and Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Year, Destiny Robinson. The men's basketball team made an appearance in the conference tournament first round under second year skipper, Rob Burke.

The spring sports season got off in February and kept everyone in our department busy into May. The spring seasons always bring on a flurry of activity for our nine spring sports. Our competitive cheer team took 2nd place at a collegiate competition in their inaugural season under new head coach Latoya Powell while Men's Lacrosse headed back to the conference tournament where they narrowly lost to conference rival, Barton College.  April always means end of the year events that celebrate our student-athlete success both in their respective fields of play and in the classroom. Be sure to note all of the academic and community success stories that our student-athletes wrote this year later in this newsletter.

I couldn't be more proud of the accomplishments that our student-athletes garnered throughout the year, both in the classroom and in their sport. Every bit of your support aids in us putting out the best possible product and ensuring awesome experiences for our programs. So, from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you!

The summer months always have a bit of sadness as we close the chapter to the 2022-23 year. It's also a time of revamping, rebuilding, and re engaging. We look forward to the opportunity to engage with you, our faithful fans, in August with our fall season openers. Be sure to follow us on our many social media outlets and online @ gocuhawks.com. Until August, be sure to log onto the athletics website to view any of our sports pages. There you can relive any of our many great sports moments from this past season (or others) and see how awesome our student-athletes really are.

Go Hawks,

Patrick Mashuda

Destiny Robinson continues to add to her impressive resume after being named Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference Carolinas announced by the league.

The Hampton, Va. native led the Conference Carolinas in blocks (66) and rebounds (251), second in rebounds per game (9.3), and fourth in scoring (14.4).

This season, Destiny Robinson achieved 1,000 career points while breaking the Chowan Division II record in rebounds and double-doubles.  Robinson is the first league Player of the Year since 2003-04 (CC Vaughan, USA South).  The graduate student is also the first to grab a First Team All-Conference selection in the Conference Carolinas since moving over to the league in 2019-20.

The Chowan Men’s and Women’s Swimming programs finished strong in the 2022-23 season at the Conference Carolinas Championships.  Both programs battled through the season as the men finished fourth overall and the women finishing in eighth.

Throughout the season, 13 school records were broken leading to 16 Conference Carolinas All-Conference selections including a Conference Champion, Aleksei Belolipetskii in the 200 IM.  The event championship was the program’s first for the men.

Following the season, the program welcomed back James Cameron as the program’s head coach.  Cameron swam for the Hawks as part of the inaugural class.  The Overland, Kansas native earned All-Conference honors during his career and ranks in the top-10 in program history in three events.

JOHNSON ERA OF FOOTBALL BEGINS IN THE GULF SOUTH

In an introductory press conference held in the Football Pond Center, the introduction of Head Coach Paul Johnson, along with the future of the Chowan Football program.

For the 2023 and 2024 seasons, the Chowan Football program will compete in the Gulf South Conference (GSC).  This move guarantees the Hawks eight conference games for the next two seasons with four home games and four road games.  The GSC features: Delta State, West Georgia, West Alabama, Shorter, North Greenville (football only), West Florida, Mississippi College, and Valdosta State.  Erskine will join the GSC in 2024 as a football only member for one season.

Starting in the 2025 season, the Chowan Football program will move to the Conference Carolinas as a full member, as the Conference Carolinas announced the addition of Shorter University as the league’s 15th member and sixth football playing member in 2024-25. It will mark the first time in Chowan’s Division II history that all of Chowan’s sponsored sports will be under the same conference affiliation.  Conference Carolinas will feature six programs with football: Barton, Chowan, Erskine, UNC Pembroke, North Greenville, and Shorter.

To start the 2023 season, Chowan will hit the road to take on Barton on Thursday, August 31 before hosting NCAA Playoff participant, Delta State, on September 9 in the program’s first-ever Gulf South contest.  The Hawks will then take on the Hawks of Shorter on the road before a potential bye week in Week 4.  Chowan will host Valdosta State on September 30 to wrap up the opening month.

In October, Chowan will face a familiar foe, North Greenville, as the Crusaders compete in the Conference Carolinas in their other sponsored sports.  The meeting will be the first since 2007.  The Hawks will then hit the road to take on West Georgia (October 14) and Mississippi College (October 21), before wrapping up with a home contest against West Alabama on October 28.

The Hawks will have a bye week before finishing up the season on the road against West Florida.  Chowan competed against the Argos during the 2016 and 2017 seasons with both programs winning on their home field.
