MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Chowan Softball team opened up their Spring Break trip at the beach with a pair of defeats on Tuesday.

Haleigh Reid and Serena Riley led the Hawks with two hits each. Riley and Caston Garland posted a home run apiece. Katelyn Matheny added two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Chowan 6, Fairmont State 14 (six innings)
Chowan started off fast as Lindsey Richter and Haleigh Reid drew walks. Serena Riley hit a three-run home run to put the Hawks up 3-0 in the top of the first. Tessa Nicholson drew a walk and moved to third on a wild pitch and a stolen base. Katelyn Matheny recorded a RBI groundout to lead 4-0.
The Hawks added a run in the second as Kyra Helton opened the inning with a single and stole second. Helton came around to score on Lindsey Richter's RBI single to right, 5-0.
The lead moved to 6-0 in the third as Tessa Nicholson singled to right before scampering over to third on a pair of stolen bases. Katelyn Matheny singled up the middle to plate Nicholson for the advantage.
Fairmont State cut into the deficit in the fifth inning with a pair of runs to trail 6-2. The Falcons forced the issue in the sixth inning as four errors in the inning allowed FSU to finish off the contest, 14-6.
Chowan 3, Goldey-Beacom 9
Goldey-Beacom took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on three hits. Chowan answered in the bottom of the third inning as Caston Garland hit a home run to right field to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
The Lightning used a five run fifth inning to lead 7-1. The Hawks looked to rally in the sixth inning as Mckenzie Misenheimer, Haleigh Reid, and Serena Riley picked up base hits to load the bases. Chowan would strand the runners in scoring positon.
GBC added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to lead 9-1. The Hawks added a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to cut into the deficit before the rally ended, 9-3.

Chowan will look to rebound on Wednesday, March 8 as the Hawks take on Madonna and Trinity International at the North Myrtle Beach Complex at 11am and 3pm.
