Second Half Surge Lifts Hawks Past Fleet

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team put their talons into the Flying Fleet in the second half to rally back for the 77-66 victory in Conference Carolinas action against Erskine on Saturday afternoon.

Daylan Askew led the Hawks with 19 points, while Isaac Hippolyte and Jay Estime added 16 points each.  Hippolyte recorded his first double-double of the season with 11 rebounds.  Christian Koonce tallied 13 points and nine rebounds.

Chowan's defense forced Erskine to shoot 21.0% (8-38) in the second half including going 0-22 to start the half.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Daylan Askew started the scoring with a jumper before a pair of triples by Jay Estime and back-to-back baskets by Christian Koonce stretched the lead to 12-3.

Erskine held the Hawks scoreless while going on a 9-0 run to even the score before RJ Wilson ended the drought with a layup.  Isaac Hippolyte added a putback and Daylan Askew dunked his own miss.  Hippolyte added another layup prior to a three-pointer by Jay Estime moved the lead to 23-16.

The Fleet answered with a 19-4 run to lead 35-27 with 2:07 remaining.  Daylan Askew ended the run with a jumper.  Christian Koonce hit three free throws to end the half and cut the deficit to 37-32 at the intermission.

Second Half:

Isaac Hippolyte started the second half rally with a layup.  Jay Estime connected from the floor and Hippolyte added a pair from the free throw line to take a 38-37 lead.  Erskine went 1-3 from the stripe to even the score before Christian Koonce finished off the three-point play.  Hippolyte added a layup and a dunk prior to a jumper by Estime, 47-38.

Erskine found a point at the charity stripe as the Fleet continued to struggle from the field.  Daylan Askew added a pair of layups in transition to stretch the lead to double-digits.  Jay Estime connected from deep prior to a pair from the stripe by Christian Koonce and Isaac Hippolyte.  Askew hit a three-pointer before Erskine connected from the floor for the first time in the half at the 6:58 mark.

Daylan Askew added five more points along with a jumper by Preston Le Gassick kept the lead at 22, 68-46.  Erskine chipped away at the deficit as the Hawks collected points at the stripe from Donavon Martin.  Skyler Davies and Cheick Traore recorded dunks as the bench was emptied in the final minutes of the contest.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns home for a rivalry contest as the Hawks host Mount Olive on Wednesday, February 8.  The Conference Carolinas contest is slated for 7pm.
