Hawks Weather Storm Against Upset Minded Tornado

BRISTOL, TENN. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team secures their postseason bid to thwart an upset bid by King in an 82-75 victory on the road in league action on Sunday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Four Hawks scored in double-figures led by Aniah Patterson with 19 points.  Destiny Robinson contributed 13 points and eight rebounds.  Tyaysia Sharpe added 12 points, while Meara Carter collected her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Tyaysia Sharpe started off the scoring with a jumper.  Keibra Hopkins picked up a point before Imani Hickman scored the next four points to lead 7-5.  Aniah Patterson hit a triple and a jumper to stretch the lead to 12-5.

Tyaysia Sharpe hit a basket prior to King closing the gap to 14-13.  Keibra Hopkins hit a jumper in transition to spark a run.  Demetria Bland would add a transition basket and Sydney Roberts hit a pair of free throws following a steal.  Bland went 1-2 from the line to lead 21-15 at the end of the opening frame.

Second Quarter:

Chowan opened the quarter on a 7-0 run as Meara Carter hit a jumper.  Aniah Patterson connected from deep and Imani Hickman added a layup to force a timeout, 28-15.

King answered with a 19-3 run to take a 34-32 lead.  Keibra Hopkins ended the run with a transition jumper.  Tyaysia Sharpe added a pair of baskets to hand the lead back to the Hawks, 38-34.

Sydney Roberts knocked down a three-pointer and Meara Carter added a putback basket to end the half with a 43-37 advantage.

Third Quarter:

Aniah Patterson knocked down a trey to start the half as King mounted another run.  Meara Carter added a pair of jumpers and a freebie.  King hung around before Jayah King-Johnson hit a layup.

The Tornado cut the deficit again to three, 53-50, before Destiny Robinson scored the next five points.  King rallied again to knot the score up at 58-all before Robinson hit a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining in the frame to lead 60-58.

Fourth Quarter:

After a King basket, Chowan countered with a 14-2 run to lead by double-digits.  Demetria Bland started the run with a three-pointer followed by a pair of baskets by Aniah Patterson.  Bland knocked down another three before King hit a pair from the stripe.  Destiny Robinson added a layup and Tyaysia Sharpe added a jumper to lead 74-62.

Tyaysia Sharpe connected from the line and Destiny Robinson added a layup to hold off the King run.  Aniah Patterson salted away the contest at the stripe with four free throws.

UP NEXT

Chowan hosts Barton on Wednesday, February 22 in the regular season finale.  The contest will be Senior Day and the Annual Play4Kay game as part of the DII Day.  Tip-off is slated for 5pm.
