Engel's Strike Late Lifts Hawks Over Lions

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. – Mayara Engel's free kick in the 82' gave the Chowan Women's Soccer a 1-0 victory over Emmanuel in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Mayara Engel provided the only offense for the Hawks with the late goal.

Kirsten Peterson saved three shots.  The Hawks tallied 10 shots on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Nicole Mejia registered the first shot in the contest as her attempt to the top left was saved by the Emmanuel keeper in the 11'.

In the 24', Natasha Bailey powered a shot towards goal that would be deflected out for a corner kick.

The Lions posted their first shot in the contest in the 26' as Kirsten Peterson produced a save and knocked the ball out for a corner kick.

Second Half:

Neither team had much offense in the early portion of the second half until Lillian DeLucca tallied a shot in the 74' that required a save by the Lions' keeper.   Cristina Flores posted a shot towards goal in the 76' that was saved.

Emmanuel posted a shot on goal in the 79' that was saved by Kirsten Peterson.

With the time winding down, Mayara Engel found the back of the net off a free kick to put the Hawks up 1-0 in the 82'.

Natasha Bailey nearly made it 2-0 in the 89' as her attempt into the lower right corner was denied along with her attempt to the right corner.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns home to take on UNC Pembroke in a Conference Carolinas contest on Tuesday, September 27.  First touch is slated for 3pm.
