Hawks Soar To Victory Over Warriors, 5-1

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Soccer team found an abundance of offense in a 5-1 win over Southern Wesleyan in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday as four different Hawks scored in the win.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Lieke Van den Akker collected two goals including the second fastest goal to start a contest just 46 seconds into the match.

Cristina Flores, Natasha Bailey, and Elena Butcher recorded one goal each.  Mayara Engel, Gizelle Garcia, and Regan Jackson added an assist.

Kirsten Peterson picked up the win in goal with three saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

The Hawks would find the back of the net quickly as Lieke Van den Akker collected the loose ball near the top right of the box and found the far post to put the Hawks up 1-0 just 46 seconds into the match.

Chowan would add to their tally just over a minute later as Cristina Flores would take a touch off the pass from Mayara Engel to find the far right post for the 2-0 lead.

The Hawks continued to push the attack up the field as Natasha Bailey collected a clear out and found the right netting as the SWU keeper was retreating for the 3-0 lead.

Southern Wesleyan would get on the board after a through ball up the middle of the pitch would find a streaking Warrior to close the gap to 3-1.

Second Half:

Regan Jackson produced a quality through ball up the middle of the pitch to find Lieke Van den Akker on the breakaway to score.

Chowan continued to send shots towards the cage throughout the second half.  Gizelle Garcia sent in a cross from the right wing and found the shin over Elena Butcher in the 84' to finish off the scoring for the Hawks.

Chowan takes a step out of league play to face nationally-ranked Catawba on the road on Wednesday, September 14.
