2022 CHOWAN HAWKS OUTLOOK
The biggest question coming into the 2022 season was who will replace Bryce Witt as the signal caller? The Hawks have five quarterbacks listed on the roster, none of which were on the roster last season.
Laurence King and Malik Tobias should be the favorite targets for whomever the quarterback will be this season as they combined for 69 receptions, 931 yards and 12 touchdowns. Tyrek McNeil and Jaylon Boyd return in the back field combining for 841 yards and six scores.
On the offensive line, the Hawks return four of the five starters from a season ago with CIAA Preseason All-CIAA selection, David Keck, to anchor the offensive front.
There are several familiar faces on the defense led by defensive coordinator Colin Neely. Preseason All-CIAA selection Simeon Burns along with Caleb Hester, J'Vin Farmer, and Keshawn Pickett will look to continue the strong push from the defense that allowed a program-low 22.6 points per game last season.
BARTON BULLDOG BITES
Barton comes into the contest in their second official season since adding the program before the pandemic. The Bulldogs posted a 6-5 overall record as an affiliate of the South Atlantic Conference (SAC).
The biggest threat from the Bulldogs comes in the form of Jordan Terrell, ranked in the top-10 in the nation during 2021 in rushing with 1843 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. Barton did not throw the ball as much last season as Jaquan Lynch tossed for 1702 yards and 11 touchdowns. Most of those throws went to Kameron Johnson (791 yards and seven touchdowns).
Shane Perry leads the Bulldog defense with 99 tackles including 12.0 TFLs, 4.0 sacks, and five forced fumbles. Kendarius Jenkins, not listed with a number on the roster, posted 93 tackles and five interceptions.
NOTABLE HEADLINES BETWEEN CHOWAN AND BARTON
The parents of Barton Head Coach, Chip Hester, Larry and Jerry graduated from Chowan in 1968. Larry played for legendary head coach Jim Garrison.
The Hawks and Bulldogs are starting a home-and-home series as the program's meet for the first time on the gridiron. Chowan and Barton, except for football, compete against each other as members of the Conference Carolinas.
