Chowan Drops Opener To Mars Hill On The Road

BANNER ELK, N.C. –  The nationally-ranked Chowan Men's Soccer team was unable to find the back of the net in the season opener against Mars Hill in the opening contest of the LMC Shope Classic on Thursday night.

Newcomer Bradley Binns tallied three shots in the contest to lead the offense.  James Randall, Tren Drexhage, and Ausar Omwenga posted one shot on goal.

Charlie Farrar recorded eight saves in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Ausar Omwenga produced a shot in the 7' following a save by Charlie Farrar.

In the 18', Mars Hill recorded a shot that sailed over the crossbar.  As the Hawks went on the counter-attack, Tren Drexhage tried to slot a shot to the far left post but the Lions' keeper kept the Hawks off the board.

Charlie Farrar made another save in the 23' as the Lions went on a 3v2 breakaway.  The Hawks would fend off the pair of corner kicks.

In the 37', James Randall nearly gave the Hawks the lead from close range, before the Lions' keeper turned away the danger.  The Lions countered on the other end before Charlie Farrar responded with a save.

Mars Hill posted a pair of close attempts in the final two minutes of action as Charlie Farrar and the defense turned away the attempts to keep the score even.

Second Half:

The Lions took the 1-0 advantage early in the second half as the Lions would finish off the corner kick in the 46'.  MHU nearly made it 2-0 in the 49' as the attempt ricocheted off the crossbar and out of harm.

In the 68', Dru Detlefsen posted a shot from distance that sailed left for the first shot of the half for the Hawks.

Dennis Bates nearly found the equalizer in the 83' as off a free kick, his attempt to the far post was corralled by the MHU keeper.

Off a corner kick, James Randall's headed attempt would miss just high of the far left post.

In the 87', Bradley Binns sent in a dangerous attempt into the six-yard box but was cleared out.

Mars Hill finished off the contest with an insurance goal in the 89'.

UP NEXT

Chowan will look to rebound on Saturday, August 27 as the Hawks take on Lander in non-conference action in Banner Elk, N.C. First touch is slated for 1pm.
