MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Monique Jones had a career-night to post a double-double as the Chowan Women's Basketball team picked up the season sweep against Mount Olive in league play on Tuesday.

Monique Jones scored a career-high 24 points on 9-12 shooting and 11 rebounds to collect a double-double. Destiny Robinson added 17 points and nine rebounds, while Tyaysia Sharpe added 11 points and Olivia Gaither posted 12 rebounds.
UMO shot 19.0% (4-21) in the first quarter and 28.2% (11-39) in the opening half. The Chowan defense held the Trojans to 29.3% (24-82) shooting in the contest.
Chowan would turn the ball over 31 times leading to 20 points for Mount Olive. The last time the Hawks turned the ball over 30+ times and won was exactly two years ago, Feb. 22, 2020 against Lees-McRae in a 71-68 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Chowan opened the contest on a 7-0 run as Monique Jones knocked down a pair of jumpers before Olivia Gaither collected the three-point play. The Trojans posted two baskets before Jones tallied another bucket to lead 9-4.
UMO evened the score at 9-all before Destiny Robinson put the Hawks back on top with a layup and a jumper. The Trojans notched a basket before Shequana Jackson and Monique Jones pushed the lead to 17-11.
Second Quarter:
Mount Olive notched the opening two baskets of the period to close the gap to 17-15. Tyaysia Sharpe would connect from deep to take the lid off the rim in the period. Olivia Gaither hit a putback layup to extend the lead to 22-15.
The Trojans cut into the deficit until Demetria Bland picked up a pair from the stripe. Destiny Robinson tallied a layup before UMO connected from deep, 26-21. Keibra Hopkins added a point at the stripe before Monique Jones hit a layup to offset the UMO basket.
Both teams spent time at the stripe in the final portion of the period as Destiny Robinson added a pair from the line to lead 31-25. Monique Jones added a jumper from the elbow and a jumper from the midrange. Jones picked up a pair at the stripe to lead 37-27.
Keibra Hopkins added a point from the stripe to send the Hawks into the locker room with a 38-29 advantage.
Third Quarter:
Monique Jones would continue her career night putting the Hawks on the board quickly in the second half. The Trojans scored the next five points before Tyaysia Sharpe added a jumper. Aniah Patterson picked up a point at the stripe to lead 43-34.
Aniah Patterson pushed the lead back to double-figures with the old-fashioned three-point play, 46-36. Destiny Robinson recorded a layup off an assist from Tyaysia Sharpe. Robinson added a pair from the stripe to continue the run. Patterson hit a free throw to offset the Trojan freebie, 51-37.
The Trojans scored the next six points to cut the deficit back to single-digits, 51-43. Tyaysia Sharpe slowed the run with a free throw before ending the run with a triple to push the advantage back to double-digits, 55-43.
Aniah Patterson knocked down a triple from the left corner as the Trojans collected points from the stripe before Monique Jones secured a layup to lead 60-50 at the end of the frame.
Fourth Quarter:
Mount Olive went on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to four, 60-56, to open up the quarter with the press before Chowan called a timeout. Destiny Robinson ended the run with a layup. Robinson posted another layup to push the advantage to 64-56.
Chowan and Mount Olive failed to score over the next four minutes as the Hawks held on to a 64-58 lead. UMO hit a putback layup before the Trojans put the Hawks at the line. Tyaysia Sharpe picked up two points at the stripe with less than a minute to play.
Destiny Robinson and Shequana Jackson split a pair from the stripe to lead 68-60 with 36.8 remaining. Jackson added another from the stripe before Trojans connected from deep to cut the deficit to 69-63.
Monique Jones secured the pair from the charity stripe with 15.2 remaining, 71-63. The Trojans would score the next five points to cut the deficit to three, 71-68, with 5.2 remaining. Jones salted away the victory at the stripe with the pair with 2.5 remaining.
