Hawks Shake Off Free Throw Woes To Down Fleet In 2OT

DUE WEST, S.C. –  The Chowan Men's Basketball team found their rhythm at the charity stripe during the overtime periods to hand Erskine a 91-83 loss in double overtime in a Conference Carolinas road contest on Tuesday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Christian Koonce led the Hawks with 23 points including 10-15 from the stripe.  Marcus Elliott chipped in with 17 points, while RJ Wilson posted 15 points and seven rebounds, and Chase Barnett tallied 14 points.  Cheick Traore hauled in 16 rebounds to go with six points.

Chowan shot 17-28 from the free throw line in regulation before going 10-13 in overtime.  The Fleet shot 56% from the floor in regulation before the Chowan defense held the Fleet to 20% (3-15) in overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Cheick Traore opened the scoring picking up the opening point at the stripe before Marcus Elliott knocked down a triple.  Christian Koonce connected from deep to extend the advantage to 7-2 early. 

Erskine would go on a 24-4 run to lead 26-11 before Jaylen Dillard slowed the run with a layup.  Chase Barnett tallied a layup to spark a 14-2 run to close the gap to 30-28.  Marcus Elliott posted a pair from the stripe before RJ Wilson and Jay Estime knocked down a pair of triples.  Estime tallied a layup along with a pair from the line by Christian Koonce.

Marcus Elliott connected from the floor before Christian Koonce evened the score at 32-all with 2:23 remaining in the half.  Elliott added a three-pointer before Daylen Askew picked up a point at the stripe.  Elliott knocked down another triple to lead 39-36.

Erskine answered to even the score before the halftime buzzer.

Second Half:

Cheick Traore opened the scoring with a jumper before Christian Koonce knocked down a triple to even the score at 45-all.  Donavon Martin posted a jumper out of the timeout before Daylen Askew knocked down a jumper to maintain the score, 49-all.

Chase Barnett added a pair from the stripe before RJ Wilson connected from the floor.  Donavon Martin posted a dunk to cut the deficit to 59-55 with 11:03 remaining.  Wilson tallied a pair of baskets as Erskine continued to maintain their five point advantage.

Christian Koonce picked up three points at the stripe before RJ Wilson hit a hook shot to even the score at 64-all with 7:49 remaining.  Wilson tallied a pair from the stripe before Chase Barnett connected from the floor to give the Hawks a 68-64 advantage.

Erskine rallied with a 7-0 run to regain the lead 71-68.  Christian Koonce answered to even the contest with 3:26 remaining.  Koonce picked up a pair at the charity stripe to keep the score deadlocked.  With 1:20 remaining, RJ Wilson came up with a block and rebound.

The Fleet would draw a charge with less than 30 seconds remaining before the Chowan defense did not allow an open shot on the final possession to draw overtime.

First Overtime:

Erskine opened the extra frame on a 6-0 run to lead 79-73 as the Hawks turned the ball over on their first three possessions.  Christian Koonce cut the deficit in half with an old-fashioned three-point play.  Jaylen Dillard connected from the floor to cut the deficit to 79-78 with 1:46 remaining.

Chase Barnett hit a pair of free throws with 21 seconds remaining to take the lead 80-79.  Marcus Elliott and RJ Wilson forced a pair of errant shots before Cheick Traore grabbed the rebound.  Traore hit the front end of the free throws.  Erskine raced down the floor to knot up the contest at 81-all.

Second Overtime:

Marcus Elliott hit a jumper from the left elbow to open the scoring in the frame.  Elliott picked up a pair at the stripe to push the advantage to 85-81.  Erskine connected from the floor before Chase Barnett answered at the other end with a driving layup, 87-83.

The Hawks defense held the Fleet to one basket as Chase Barnett picked up two more points at the stripe as the Fleet were forced to foul with less than 30 seconds to play.  Cheick Traore tallied a pair at the line with eight ticks remaining to finish off the contest.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns home for a Conference Carolinas weekend against North Greenville and Converse starting on Friday, February 4.  Tip-off is slated for 7pm.
