CU Newsletter: December 2022

12/2/2022 1:30:00 PM

Dear Hawks Fans,

Winter greetings from Chowan University Athletics! It seems like just a few weeks ago we were preparing for fall sports to kick off but here it is December and the fall sports seasons are all finished! What a year it was for our Fall Sports! There were so many brag worthy moments that occurred this fall sports season that I could write on for pages and still not be done.

Our football team finished the year CIAA Northern Division Champions and earned a spot in their first-ever CIAA Title Game in Salem, Va. In a tough gridiron battle, a last second field goal by Fayetteville State in the 4th quarter saw the Hawks season come to a climatic close. The volleyball team won a conference tournament match, beating Barton for the third time on the season. Freshman Diana Rodriguez earned Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year honors. Our soccer teams continued to compete at a high level and saw two women’s soccer players and three men’s players earn All-Conference accolades. Senior Harri Lovett earned Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Year honors. Our cross country teams both competed at higher levels this year and saw several runners set and break personal records. The entire Chowan community is exceptionally proud of our student-athletes and staff who work tirelessly to ensure all these successes each season.

Our winter sports are back in action and we invite you to join in the fun with us by becoming a member of the Brave Hawks Club. Membership gets you into home basketball games and halftime hospitality. All three of our basketball teams are off to a great start and game days in the Hawks Athletic Center have been electric so far.  Our men’s and women’s swim teams are in the pool and have had a successful start to the season, with many personal records to brag about. We look forward to seeing what this group of student-athletes do in the water this year.

We look forward to the opportunity to engage with you, our faithful fans. Be sure to follow us on our many social media outlets and online @ gocuhawks.com.

Go Hawks,

The Women’s Basketball team looks to build off of last year's first ever Conference Carolinas semifinal appearance. Coach Lenise Stallings and the Hawks come off of a 18-10 overall record and a 17-7 record in league play. The Hawks return seven solid players from a year ago, including Destiny Robinson who has been named Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Week two times this season so far.  A slew of new players and transfers round out the Hawks roster this season.  Look for the Hawks in action with seven doubleheaders as we head into the New Year. At the time of this newsletter, the Hawks sit at 4-2 overall with one conference loss. The team has two home doubleheaders in December.

Coach Rob Burke enters his second season as head coach for the Blue and White. Chowan finished with an 8-18 overall record and had a 8-15 record in conference play last season. The Hawks will look to Redshirt Sophomore Christian Koonce and Graduate student Jay Estime to lead the team this year. Burke brought in a group of new players who are already contributing to the overall success of the team early on. At the time of this newsletter publication, the Hawks posted two back-to-back home wins and host three home games in the month of December.

Coach Matt Lynch has the Hawks development team playing well, led by senior guard Jaren Reid. Reid, a native of Suffolk, Va., has posted two games with 25 points this season. Chowan sits at 2-2 on the development team side with one game left in the month of December.
