Chowan Unable To Get Buzzer Beater To Fall Against Bears

HICKORY, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team led by double-digits along with having a chance at the end of regulation and overtime but could not find the roll as the Hawks drop a 66-64 decision on the road against Lenoir-Rhyne on Monday.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Jay Estime paced the Hawks with 14 points.  Daylan Askew and RJ Wilson posted 10 points each.  Skyler Davies collected nine points.

Isaac Hippolyte hauled in 10 rebounds, while Cheick Traore added eight.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Lenoir-Rhyne started off the game with a quick 6-0 run.  Chase Barnett picked up the opening points for the Hawks in the contest from the stripe.  Christian Koonce tallied a putback basket as the Bears extended their lead to 12-4.  Koonce connected from the elbow before RJ Wilson finished off the three-point play.

Jay Estime hit a jumper from inside the paint as Cheick Traore notched a point from the stripe to cut the deficit to 17-12.  Skyler Davies knocked down a triple before a transition basket by RJ Wilson cut the deficit to 19-17.  Davies added a pair from the stripe as Lenoir-Rhyne answered with a three-pointer.

Preston Le Gassick posted a layup in transition before RJ Wilson knocked down a triple to cut the deficit to 25-24.  Veigar Alexandersson would hand the Hawks the lead with a layup, 26-25, with 2:07 remaining in the opening half to force a timeout by the Bears as L-R went scoreless for over five minutes.

Daylan Askew registered a layup before the Bears evened the score before the half at 28-all.

Second Half:

Jay Estime opened the scoring in the half with a step-back triple.  Cheick Traore finished off a three-point play to extend the lead to 34-28 early in the half.  After a L-R basket, Daylan Askew connected from the deep wing.  Estime knocked down another trey to push the lead to 40-32.

RJ Wilson connected from the floor before Isaac Hippolyte notched a putback basket.  Daylan Askew finished off a layup in transition to lead by double-digits, 46-35, to force a timeout by the Bears.  L-R would rattle off six straight points before Preston Le Gassick ended the run with a floating jumper and the freebie.

The Bears clawed back to take the lead, 51-49, with a 10-0 run as the Hawks were held scoreless for over four minutes.  Jay Estime ended the drought with a jumper to even the score.  Skyler Davies handed the lead back to the Hawks with a baseline jumper in transition.  Daylan Askew knocked down a triple from the corner before the Bears answered at the other end.

With 3:18 remaining, Lenoir-Rhyne evened the score with a free throw, 56-all, but Jay Estime used a driving layup to give the lead back to the Hawks.  Skyler Davies added a dunk off the assist by Estime.  L-R added a pair from the stripe to cut the deficit in half, 60-58, with less than a minute to play.

Lenoir-Rhyne registered a block and scored at the other end in transition to even the score with 14.9 remaining.  The Hawks would move the ball into the front court with 8.3 remaining and called a timeout to draw up the final possession.  RJ Wilson would hit the front end of the rim at the buzzer to head to overtime.

Overtime:

Lenoir-Rhyne scored in transition on back-to-back possessions to take a 64-60 lead.  The Hawks ended a nearly four-minute drought as Isaac Hippolyte finished off a miss.  Jay Estime would answer the L-R basket to keep the contest a one possession contest, 66-64.

The Hawks had several chances late in the frame but could not score inside the paint.  Chowan would grab the rebound following a missed free throw with 8.0 remaining.  Chase Barnett's jumper from the elbow would not go at the buzzer.

UP NEXT

Chowan will take the rest of 2022 off as the Hawks return to the court on January 4 on the road against North Greenville in Conference Carolinas action.
