Big Second Half Run Propels Hawks Past Trojans

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team played one of the best halves of the season in the second half to run past their rivals, Mount Olive, in Conference Carolinas action on the road on Wednesday night, 101-88, to post their third straight victory.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

For the first time since February 15, 2017 (at Lincoln) the Hawks topped the 100 point plateau.

Chowan notched six players in double figures led by Christian Koonce with 18 points.  Jay Estime posted 15 points, while Preston Le Gassick and Skyler Davies tallied 14 points each.  RJ Wilson added 11 points, with Chase Barnett collected 10 points.

Cheick Traore cleaned up the glass with 14 rebounds.  Preston Le Gassick collected five assists.  Chowan outscored the Trojans 50-34 in the paint while notching a 14-4 advantage on the offensive glass.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Cheick Traore started the scoring with a hook shot before Isaac Hippolyte collected a basket following an offensive rebound.  Hippolyte added a 1-2 trip to the line to lead 5-2 early.  UMO countered with a quick 13-2 run as Daylan Askew posted a layup for the Hawks.  Askew ended the run with a pair from the stripe out of the media timeout, 15-9.

RJ Wilson scored nine of the next 11 points for the Hawks as UMO stretched their lead to 31-20.  Jay Estime notched a putback bucket during the offensive stall.  Christian Koonce hit the front end of the and-one before finishing off his own miss to cut the deficit to 31-24.

Skyler Davies collected a layup before Christian Koonce notched a pair from the stripe.  Jay Estime knocked down a triple along with a layup by Chase Barnett cut the deficit to three, 36-33, and forced a timeout.  Koonce tallied a putback basket to keep pace with the Trojans.

With 1:24 remaining, Jay Estime knocked down a triple in transition before Chase Barnett collected a layup to give the lead to the Hawks, 40-38.  The Trojans finished off the half with a pair of baskets to lead 42-40.

Second Half:

Chase Barnett collects a layup to open up the scoring for the Hawks in the half.  Cheick Traore registered a blocked shot allowing a layup at the other end for Daylan Askew.  Jay Estime posted a pair from the stripe as Barnett added a driving layup in a back-and-forth opening minutes, 50-48.

Daylan Askew continued the trend with a jumper along with a jumper by Jay Estime and Chase Barnett.  Skyler Davies evened the score at 57-all with a three-pointer off the assist by Preston Le Gassick.  Christian Koonce handed the Hawks the lead with a jumper before Koonce connected from the floor in transition, 63-61.

UMO went on a 10-2 run to regain the lead 70-65 as RJ Wilson notched a layup during the run.  Skyler Davies ended the run with an alley-oop from Chase Barnett.  Cheick Traore collected a pair from the stripe before the lead went back to the Hawks, 72-70, on a triple from Jay Estime to cap off the run.

Veigar Alexandersson sparked an 8-0 run for the Hawks with a layup before Preston Le Gassick completed the three-point play and knocked down a triple to lead 80-74 with 6:03 remaining.  UMO slowed the run with a pair from the stripe before Le Gassick knocked down another triple off an offensive rebound.  Skyler Davies hit a three-pointer to stretch the advantage to 86-78 within a minute.  Le Gassick added a jumper in transition to force a timeout by the Trojans, 88-78.

Following a basket by UMO, Christian Koonce tallied a layup and a jumper to keep the Hawks in front by double figures.  Preston Le Gassick knocked down another triple to push the advantage to 95-80.  Veigar Alexandersson posted a layup before the Trojans ended the run with a three-pointer.

Skyler Davies notched a layup with less than a minute to go to maintain the double digit lead.  Davies posted a pair at the stripe to finish off the scoring.

Chowan hosts Lees-McRae in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday, December 3.  Tip-off is slated for 4pm.
