Cold Shooting Hinders Hawks Against Patriots

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team was unable to overcome the cold shooting from behind the arc in a 72-60 loss to Francis Marion in Conference Carolinas action on Tuesday evening.

Keibra Hopkins led the Hawks with 15 points on 6-12 shooting.  Destiny Robinson collected her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Aniah Patterson stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Demetria Bland posted eight points and four steals.

Chowan shot 2-14 (14.3%) from deep.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Francis Marion raced out to an early 7-2 lead as Jayah King-Johnson put the Hawks on the board with a layup.  Destiny Robinson ended the run with a jumper.  Tyayasia Sharpe picked up a point at the stripe to cut the deficit to 7-5.  Demetria Bland kept pace with the Patriots with a layup.  Bland tallied a pair from the stripe to even the score at 9-all midway through the frame.

Francis Marion went on a quick 5-0 run to push their lead to 14-9 on a pair of turnovers before Yasmine Brown hit a pull up jumper.  Destiny Robinson picked up a pair at the stripe before the Patriots extended their lead to 22-13 with a 6-0 run.  Demetria Bland ended the frame with a pair at the stripe, 22-15.

Second Quarter:

After an opening basket by the Patriots, Aniah Patterson collected a basket to put the Hawks on the board in the frame.  Keibra Hopkins knocked down a jumper before Imani Hickman posted a pair from the stripe, 27-21.  Hopkins closed the gap with a jumper off an offensive rebound before Demetria Bland hit a deep two.  Patterson evened the score at 27-all with a pair from the stripe with 5:14 remaining after a swarming defensive effort.

FMU regained the lead with a 7-0 run grabbing most of those points from the charity stripe.  Keibra Hopkins slowed the run with a jumper before the Patriots answered with a three-point play, 37-29.  The Patriots continued their lead with a three-pointer to close out the half, 40-29.

Third Quarter:

Keibra Hopkins put the Hawks on the board in the second half with a putback bucket.  Hopkins connected from deep before the Patriots answered.  Aniah Patterson added a layup following her own miss.  Patterson collected another basket to keep the deficit in single-digits, 47-38.

Both teams struggled to find a basket over a three minute stretch in the middle portion of the quarter as Tyaysia Sharpe picked up a point at the stripe.  FMU pushed their advantage back to double figures, 53-39, to break the scoreless drought.  The Hawks continued to struggle from the floor not connecting from the floor in the final five-plus minutes of the frame until Jayah King-Johnson posted a layup to close out the quarter, 53-41.

Fourth Quarter:

Tyaysia Sharpe connected from the floor to start the quarter.  Aniah Patterson added a layup on a putback to cut the deficit to 53-45 early in the frame.  FMU picked up points at the stripe as foul trouble started to be an issue.  Destiny Robinson collected a layup before the Patriots knocked down a triple to push the advantage back to double-figures, 58-47.

Keibra Hopkins knocked down a jumper from the elbow as the Patriots went on a 7-0 run.  Hopkins added a pair from the stripe.  Destiny Robinson ended the run with a layup.  Tyayasia Sharpe knocked down a triple with 3:11 remaining to close the gap to 66-56.

Destiny Robinson added a layup but the Patriots would answer with a three-pointer at the other end.  Robinson picked up another layup before the end of the game.

UP NEXT

Chowan has the holiday off to regroup as the Hawks hit the road to take on Mount Olive on Wednesday, November 30.  Tip-off is slated for 5pm in Mount Olive, N.C.
