Hawks Control Glass, Soars Past Virginia State

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team cleaned the glass to a tune of 65 rebounds in a 57-34 victory over Virginia State in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.

Chowan posted 30 offensive rebounds that led to 32 second chance points.

Keibra Hopkins, Jayah King-Johnson, and Destiny Robinson posted eight points each.  Robinson added 13 rebounds and three blocks, while King-Johnson added 10 rebounds.  Imani Hickman collected 10 rebounds.

Chowan's defense held Virginia State to 20.0% (10-50) shooting on the night.  The Trojans picked up most of their points at the stripe (13-16).

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

After two scoreless opening minutes of the contest, Virginia State would get on the board with a pair from the stripe.  Destiny Robinson collected the first basket of the game with a putback layup that sparked a 19-1 run.  Jayah King-Johnson added a jumper and Aniah Patterson knocked down a triple to put the Hawks up 7-2.

VSU collected a point at the stripe before Destiny Robinson added another offensive rebound and putback.  Imani Hickman and Keiba Hopkins added points in the paint before Aniah Patterson knocked down a jumper.  Hickman and Jayah King-Johnson added a putback basket to push the advantage to 19-3.  VSU ended the quarter with a basket.

Second Quarter:

The Trojans picked up for quick points before Keibra Hopkins put the Hawks on the board in the quarter.  Another four point spurt by VSU closed the gap to 21-13 before Yasmine Brown connected from deep.

VSU continued to chip away to cut the deficit to six, 24-18, Keibra Hopkins connected from the floor to lead 26-18 at the intermission.

Third Quarter:

Jayah King-Johnson posted a pair of putbacks to start the half for the Hawks before a jumper by Tyaysia Sharpe and a layup by Robinson pushed the lead back to double-figures, 34-24.  Both teams would go scoreless for the next three minutes until Reagan Wilson went coast-to-cost for a layup.

Jayah King-Johnson and Keibra Hopkins scored to end the frame to lead 40-26.

Fourth Quarter:

Sydney Roberts connected from the floor for her first collegiate points off an assist from Yasmine Brown.  Imani Hickman and Roberts added a bucket each to continue the scoring for the Hawks, 46-28.

Chowan would go on an 11-3 run midway through the frame.  Kashara Simpson started the run with a jumper before Demetria Bland left her defender in the back court and scored in transition.  VSU picked up points at the stripe as Reagan Wilson and Sydney Roberts added a pair of baskets.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns to the court on Saturday, November 19 as the Hawks host rival, Elizabeth City State.  Tip-off is slated for 2pm.
