Early Second Half Goals Stymies Hawks On The Road

BELMONT, N.C. – After finding the equalizer in the first half, the Chowan Women's Soccer team's late rally was not enough to overcome the Belmont Abbey second half attack to fall in league action on the road on Wednesday.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Natasha Bailey scored her fourth goal of the season.  Lieke Van den Akker connected with her fourth assist of the season.  Ysa Novak scored her second goal in as many games.

Kirsten Peterson picked up five saves in goal including a penalty kick save.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Destiny Makanjuola produced the opening shot of the contest off the corner kick as the attempt to the lower left was saved.

Belmont Abbey had an opportunity to take the lead in the 13' as the Crusaders were given a penalty.  Kirsten Peterson was able to make the save to keep the score level.

The Crusaders had several shots miss the target until the 23' as the shot attempt found the top left corner for the 1-0 lead.

After a saved shot by Kirsten Peterson, the Hawks went on the counter attack scoring 28 seconds later as Natasha Bailey found the lower right corner off the assist by Lieke Van den Akker in the 26'.

Kirsten Peterson was required to make a pair of saves late in the half.

Second Half:

Belmont Abbey benefited off a free kick in the 55' as the free kick found the back of the net in the lower left corner.  The Crusaders added another goal in the 57' into the top right corner to lead 3-1.

Mayara Engel produced a shot on goal to the lower left that was saved.  Regan Jackson's attempt in the 82' would be blocked and resulted in a corner kick.  Ysa Novak would finish off the corner finding the lower left corner to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Chowan returns home to take on Converse in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday, October 8.
