Hawks Hoops Take On Braves To Bring In 2022

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's and Women's Basketball teams hit the road to start 2022 with a "short" trip down to Pembroke to take on UNC Pembroke on Tuesday.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL NOTES

Chowan enters the contest with a 5-4 overall record and a 5-2 mark in league play.  The Hawks have won four of their last five contests including a dominant win over King in their last contest.

Destiny Robinson, coming off a triple-double performance (17 pts, 12 rebs, 11 blks), leads the team averaging 16.2 points and 10.0 rebounds.  Aniah Patterson is averaging 10.3 points, while Monique Jones (8.1) and Demetria Bland (8.0) contributes into the scoring.

The Hawks lost 64-54 to the Braves on November 30 at home.  UNCP went to the line 32 times in the contest.

HALTING THE BRAVES

UNC Pembroke sits second in the Conference Carolinas standings with an 8-3 overall record and 6-1 mark in league play.  The Braves are coming off a big win against Belmont Abbey (68-52) on December 18.

Gabby Smith leads the team averaging 13.3 points per game this season.  UNCP's defense is second in the country in field goal defense allowing 30.5% shooting along with allowing 52.0 points per game

MEN'S BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS

Chowan fought back from an eight point deficit with 4:04 remaining to pick up their first win of the season against King before break to move to 1-8 on the season and 1-6 in league play.

In his first action of the season, Marcus Elliott posted 22 points to lead the team.  Jay Estime is averaging 12.4 points, while Christian Koonce collects 9.9 points per game.

HANDLING THE PATRIOTS

UNC Pembroke comes into the contest sporting a #22 national ranking with a 9-1 overall record and a 6-1 mark in league play.

The Braves tally four players in double-figure scoring this season led by Spencer Levi with 15.7 points per game.  Jordan Ratliffe is averaging 15.5 points, while Deon Berrien (12.8) and Tyrell Kirk (11.8) are also in double-figures.

UNCP averages 87.2 points per game, 12th best in the country.
