Chowan Drops Contest Late Against Lions

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team came up short in a back-and-forth affair on the road in Conference Carolinas action on Thursday evening, 75-72.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Christian Koonce paced the Hawks with 22 points.  Daylen Askew and Marcus Elliott chipped in with 12 points each, while Jay Estime tallied 11 points.  Cheick Traore added eight points and 11 rebounds.

Emmanuel used the plus-four margin in turnovers leading to a plus-six clip in points off turnovers.

Chowan falls to 3-6 in games decided by seven or less points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Cheick Traore opened the contest with a jumper.  Emmanuel scored the next five points before Jay Estime connected from deep to even the score at 5-all.  Marcus Elliott knocked down a triple following another 5-0 run by the Lions, 10-8.

Marcus Elliott tallied another triple before Christian Koonce posted a layup to hand the Hawks a 13-10 advantage.  Royce Jarrett answered the Emmanuel bucket with a three-pointer of his own.  The Lions scored the next five points before Koonce knocked down a triple to lead 19-18.

Jaylen Dilliard connected from the floor before Cheick Traore hit a hook shot to lead 23-20.  Emmanuel rallied with the next five points to regain the lead 25-23.

Daylen Askew picked up a pair from the stripe out of the media timeout.  Askew connected from deep before Marcus Elliott tallied a pair from the stripe and a jumper to continue the run, 32-25.  The Lions slowed the run with a pair from the charity stripe prior to Jay Estime knocking down a trey, 35-27.

Emmanuel answered with a 9-0 run to regain the lead 36-35 with 36 seconds remaining in the half.  Christian Koonce ended the run with a layup out of the called timeout to lead 37-36 at the half.

Second Half:

Emmanuel opened up the frame on a run before Jay Estime knocked down a three-pointer and Christian Koonce tallied a layup in transition to regain the lead 42-41.  The Lions grabbed the lead with a pair of free throws.  Koonce posted a pair of baskets to swap the one point lead back to the Hawks.

Daylen Askew knocked down a three-pointer as the Lions answered at the charity stripe to hand the lead back to the Lions.  Christian Koonce slowed the run with a floating jumper.  Koonce would connect from the floor again with a three-point play to cut the deficit to 59-54.

Daylen Askew hit a trey to offset the Emmanuel basket.  Christian Koonce and Askew tallied a point at the stripe.  Cheick Traore posted a putback bucket as the Lions collected points at the stripe to lead 69-61.

Cheick Traore scored a driving layup before Jay Estime and Royce Jarrett tallied a layup to cut the deficit to 69-67.  Marcus Elliott hit a jumper to even the score with 2:24 remaining.  The Lions picked up a pair of points at the stripe.

With under a minute to play, would miss the front-end of the one-and-one.  The Lions answered with a layup with 14 seconds left to take a 73-69 advantage.  Christian Koonce knocked down a triple with two seconds remaining to cut the deficit to one, 73-72.

The Lions tallied a pair at the stripe to finish off the contest, 75-72.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns home to host Lees-McRae in a Conference Carolinas contest on Saturday, January 29.  Tip-off is slated for 4pm.
