BECKLEY, W.VA. – The Chowan Women's Soccer team opened the season on the short end of a 3-1 defeat against nationally-ranked Concord on the road on Thursday afternoon.

Carolina Lucci scored her first goal of the season and 40th of her career.  Sierra Gonzalez tallied an assist.

Allison Traub faced 17 shots picking up eight saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Concord took advantage of a back post run just 65 seconds into the match as the Mountain Lions took a 1-0 advantage.

Cristina Flores posted a shot off a free kick that was corralled.  Sabrina Henderson had a shot that missed just left of the diving keeper in the 26'.

Concord took a 1-0 lead into the halftime whistle.

Second Half:

Sabrina Henderson nearly made it equal in the 46' as a low shot was saved.

The Mountain Lions would take a 2-0 lead in the 69' before Sierra Gonzalez flicked a ball to the right side of the pitch and found Carolina Lucci for the opening score for the Hawks in the 72'.

The momentum would stall for the Hawks as Concord found an insurance goal in the 82' to take the victory 3-1.

Carolina Lucci posted a low shot in the 88' that forced a difficult save and a corner kick.

Chowan opens their home slate on Thursday, September 9 as the Hawks host former league member, Limestone, in a non-conference tilt.  Opening touch is at 12pm.
