MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team was unable to maintain the momentum as the Hawks took Barton to five sets in the regular season finale in Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday evening.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Katie Houston recorded double-doubles. Rosa-Martinez posted a team-high 15 kills to go along with 20 digs for her third double-double of the season. Houston posted 14 kills and a team-high 24 digs for her fourth double-double.
Hannah Sladick notched 10 kills, while Natalia Vega-Aponte tallied 18 digs. Ciara Ortega handed out 34 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set: Chowan 18, Barton 25
Katie Houston started the contest with a kill as Chowan led 4-1 early. Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Chloe Putnam tallied a kill each before the score would be knotted up on several occasions.
Hannah Sladick and Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted a kill and a service ace by Katie Houston kept the score close.
Katie Houston registered a kill before Hannah Sladick notched a kill to trail 20-18. Barton rattled off the next five points to take the set.
Second Set: Chowan 25, Barton 21
Katie Houston served up an ace, followed by a kill by Hannah Sladick, Chloe Putnam, and Anixa Rosa-Martinez to even the score at 5-all.
An ace by Alondra Rivera-Miranda and kill by Katie Houston allowed the Hawks to lead 11-8.
Hannah Sladick started a rally with a kill along with four kills by Anixa Rosa-Martinez pushed the advantage to 17-12.
Katie Houston and Hannah Sladick pushed the lead to 21-15 before Barton closed the gap to 21-19. Houston and Sladick recorded a pair of kills to keep the Hawks moving before Anixa Rosa-Martinez ended the set with a kill.
Set Three: Chowan 26, Barton 24
Hannah Sladick and Katie Houston started the scoring with a pair of kills before Barton rallied to lead 4-2. Houston, Anamarie Colon-Calero, and Anixa Rosa-Martinez notched a kill each to even the score at seven.
Anamarie Colon-Calero recorded a kill as Barton went on the prowl to lead 17-10. Errors by the Bulldogs allowed Chowan to climb back into the set as a block by Katie Houston and a kill by Hannah Sladick cut the deficit to 19-16.
Once again, Barton committed errors as a kill by Katie Houston pushed the score to 23-22, in favor of the Hawks. Ciara Ortega posted a kill before a service ace by Houston and a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez finished off the set.
Fourth Set: Chowan 23, Barton 25
The set would switch hands early with a kill by Katie Houston, a pair of service aces by Natalia Vega-Aponte and a kill by Hannah Sladick had the Hawks leading 6-5.
Anixa Rosa-Martinez notched a pair of kills coupled with Barton errors and a kill by Katie Houston allowed the Hawks to lead 14-10.
Nyah Powers, Ciara Ortega, Anixa Rosa-Martinez, Anamarie Colon-Calero, and Katie Houston tallied a kill during the stretch as Barton stayed close, 20-16.
Leading 22-18, the Hawks saw the Bulldogs rally to knot the score up at 22-all and take the set despite Katie Houston slowing the run with a kill.
Fifth Set: Chowan 12, Barton 15
Ciara Ortega started off the decisive fifth set with an ace. Nyah Powers, Anixa Rosa-Martinez, and Anamarie Colon-Calero put the Hawks on top 4-3 with a kill each.
Ciara Ortega and Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted a kill to lead 7-6 before Barton took the lead 10-7. Hannah Sladick and Katie Houston notched a kill before another Barton run pushed the deficit to 13-9.
Katie Houston ended the scoring for the Hawks with a kill to trail 13-12 before Barton found the final two points of the match.

Chowan finished the regular season with a 1-9 overall and conference record. They await the league standings as Conference Carolinas Pool Play will begin on Saturday, April 10.
