Chowan Softball Splits Series With Converse

DUNCAN, S.C. – The Chowan Softball team picked up their first Conference Carolinas victory in program history in game one before dropping the nightcap with 14 hits.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Serena Riley led the Hawks offensively with four hits including two doubles, a triple, and three RBI.  Hannah Eden, Paige Wilhelm, and Meredith Morgan tallied three hits each.

Kaitlin Brunelli and Delaney Devor picked up two hits.  Brunelli hit a home run.

Megan Vincent pitched a complete game shutout with 10 strikeouts and three hits.

Chowan posted 14 hits in game two while leaving 12 runners on base.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 8, Converse 0

Hannah Eden led off the contest reaching on an error.  Jesse Gentry picked up a single before Haleigh Reid reached on a three base error allowing the bases to clear for a 2-0 lead.  Serena Riley hit a sacrifice fly to give the Hawks a 3-0 advantage.

Jesse Gentry picked up a double in the third but was left stranded.  Serena Riley would reach on an error in the fourth inning and Paige Wilhelm reached on a bunt single but was unable to extend the lead.

The Hawks doubled their lead in the sixth inning as Paige Wilhelm recorded a one-out walk.  Meredith Morgan reached on a bunt single allowing Wilhelm to move to third.  Kelsey Sonntag notched a sacrifice fly to plate Wilhelm before Meredith Morgan scored on an error allowing Mikayla Luskin to reach.  Luskin would come around to score on Hannah Eden's double to lead 6-0.

Megan Vincent had limit stress on the base paths sprinkling three hits in the contest.

Jesse Gentry tripled to lead off the seventh and did not advance on Haleigh Reid's double.  Both runners scored on Serena Riley's triple to lead 8-0.

Game Two: Chowan 4, Converse 7

Hannah Eden posted a single to start game two.  Jesse Gentry reached on a fielder's choice before a Serena Riley double and a Paige Wilhelm single posted the opening run of the contest, 1-0.

Converse tallied three hits in the bottom of the inning to even the score at 1-all.

Chowan countered with a run in the second inning as Meredith Morgan and Mary-Grace Crosby posted one-out singles.  Delaney Devor singled to plate Morgan for the 2-1 lead.

Kaitlin Brunelli and Hannah Naifeh picked up singles in the third inning.  The Valkyries posted three hits in the third inning to even the score before Naifeh threw the go-ahead runner out at the plate to end the inning.

Converse used two errors in the fourth inning to explode for five runs to lead 7-2.

The Hawks looked to rally in the seventh inning as Serena Riley led off the inning with a double.  Kaitlin Brunelli would hit a two-run home run to bring the score to 7-4.  Meredith Morgan singled and Kelsey Sonntag was hit by a pitch but were left stranded to end the contest.

Chowan is scheduled to host King in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader on Friday, March 26.  First pitch is slated for 1pm.
