Chowan Picks Up Much Needed Win Against Fleet

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team picked up a much needed win against Erskine in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon on the road.

Jaedon Willis posted a career-high 26 points to pace the Hawks offensively.  Jaylen Dilliard added 17 points, while Jonathan McFall posted 16 points.

Calvin Ahoume grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Chowan shot 56.3% from the floor in the first half to shoot 53.6% in the contest while holding Erskine to 36.6% shooting in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Jonathan McFall put the Hawks on the board with a putback after the offensive rebound.  Jaylen Dilliard knocked down a three pointer to put the Hawks up 5-0.

Tahkey Williams knocked down a corner trey to end a small four point spurt by the Fleet.  Jonathan McFall and Jaylen Dilliard added a pair of buckets to offset the Erskine three-pointer, 12-9. 

Jaedon Willis and Xavier Young connected from deep to spark a run.  Young went 1-2 from the line before Calvin Ahoume recorded a dunk in transition to lead 21-9.

Erskine would go on a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to 25-21 as Xavier Young connected from the stripe and Jaylen Dilliard recorded a layup during the offensive stall.

The Fleet continued their run following the Chowan timeout.  Elijah Hill recorded a layup before the Fleet connected from deep to cut the deficit to 27-26.

Jaedon Willis record a layup but the Fleet used the technical foul free throws to keep the deficit at one.  Jonathan McFall hit a jumper along with a jumper by Jamal Thomas and layup by Elijah Hill pushed the lead to 35-30.

After the front-end of the three-point play by the Fleet, Jonathan McFall connected from the floor twice to push the lead back to double-digits, 42-32.  Jamal Thomas posted a layup before a three-pointer by the Fleet at the buzzer to lead 44-35 at the break.

Second Half:

Erskine opened the scoring in the half with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to one, 44-43, and force a Chowan timeout.  The Fleet continued their run to take a 47-46 lead as Jaedon Willis tallied a floater during the offensive stall. 

Jamal Thomas sparked a 9-2 run with a layup before Jonathan McFall recorded a bucket and Jaylen Dilliard scored five points.  Thomas finished off the three-point play to push the lead to 58-52.

Jaedon Willis connected from deep and hit both from the stripe to push the lead back to double-figures, 63-52.  Willis added two more from the stripe and a pair of jumpers to maintain the double-digit advantage.

The Hawks would pick up points at the stripe by Jaedon Willis, Elijah Hill, and Jonathan McFall maintained the advantage, 75-65.  Willis recorded a layup before Tahkey Williams picked up a point at the stripe.

Jaedon Willis knocked down a trey to offset the Erskine triple with Willis converted the four-point play.  Erskine picked up a pair from the stripe before Jonathan McFall added a bucket, 84-70.

The Hawks would pick up points at the stripe to ice the victory.  Paul Whitby recorded a layup in the final minute of play.

UP NEXT

Chowan will return home to take on Mount Olive on Tuesday, February 23.  Tip-off is slated for 7pm.
