Hawks Drop Season Opener Against Broncos

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team could not hold off the strong second half against Fayetteville State in the season opener for the Hawks on the road.

Jay Estime paced the Hawks with 22 points on 7-11 shooting and 4-6 from behind the arc.  RJ Wilson and Calvin Ahoume chipped in with eight points each.  Cheick Traore posted eight rebounds and two clocks.  Ahoume hauled in seven rebounds and two blocks.

The Hawks were called for 22 fouls compared to 16 for the Broncos.  Chowan turned the ball over 22 times leading to 25 points for Fayetteville State.

Chowan shot 26.5% in the second half and 36.1% in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

The Hawks would get on the board after a Cheick Traore posted a tip-in for the opening basket.  Fayetteville State went on an 8-0 run to take a 10-2 lead before Jay Estime knocked down a triple to cut the deficit in half.

Jay Estime collected another basket before Aaron James scored the next five points for the Hawks to take a 12-11 lead.  Calvin Ahoume added a layup before Estime knocked down another triple to knot the score at 17-all.

Both teams battled back-and-forth with the lead as Jay Estime picked up a pair at the stripe.  Christian Koonce hit a jumper to hand the lead back to the Hawks, 21-20.

FSU went on a 6-0 run to force a Chowan timeout, 26-20.  Christian Koonce knocked down a jumper and Jay Estime hit a three to trim the deficit to 28-26.  RJ Wilson finished off the three-point play to give the Hawks a 29-28 lead.

The Broncos finished off the half on a 9-4 run as Jaylen Dilliard and Calvin Ahoume scored before the half to trail 37-33.

Second Half:

Jay Estime opened up the half with a three pointer prior to FSU offsetting the basket with points at the stripe heading to the stripe with the bonus with 16-plus minutes left in the half.  Calvin Ahoume ended the spurt with a jumper, 42-38.

The Broncos would open up the contest with a 6-0 run before the media timeout to lead by double-digits, 48-38.  Donavon Martin recorded a putback bucket and finished off the three-point play with the free throw.

FSU pushed out to their largest lead with just under 10 minutes to play after a quick 10-0 run to lead 58-41.  RJ Wilson notched a layup to slow down the Broncos' attack.  Wilson knocked down a triple to cut the deficit to 62-46.

Jay Estime knocked down a bucket before FSU pushed in front 69-48 with six minutes to play.  Estime collected a pair from the stripe.  Cheick Traore ran the floor for the Hawks picking up a layup from Jaylen Dilliard after Traore notched a block at the defensive end.  Estime knocked down a jumper before Traore picked up a point at the stripe.

Calvin Ahoume finished off the scoring with a putback.

Chowan will have a week to regroup as the Hawks open up Conference Carolinas action against Lees-McRae on Tuesday, November 23 in Banner Elk, N.C.
